Originally the palace of Abdulaziz, the founding king of Saudi Arabia, Muraba Palace is now a witness to the magnificent history of the kingdom's capital. The palace was built on the outside of the walls of the old city of Riyadh, on land previously cultivated in winter. The building marked the first major expansion of the capital, as the country stood firm at the start of a new era of prosperity. After the palace was completed in 1938, King Abdulaziz moved there until his death in 1953. The building as a whole is in traditional Najd style - walls and ceilings adorned with giant palm fronds and rooms are organized around an airy central courtyard.
