Lawang Sewu

This is the must go if you come to Semarang. Lawang Sewu or A Thousand Door is a colonial office built at the Dutch Era back in 1900.It was originally a Dutch Train Company Office, but when Japan came to occupy Indonesia, they took over the building and used the basement as a prison and to torture locals and their hostiles.Now the building is believed to be haunted, especially the basement, where it's now flooded and not allowed for visitors.

Lawang Sewu adalah gedung bersejarah milik PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) yang awalnya digunakan sebagai Kantor Pusat perusahaan kereta api swasta Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NISM). Gedung Lawang Sewu dibangun secara bertahap di atas lahan seluas 18.232 m2. Bangunan utama dimulai pada 27 Februari 1904 dan selesai pada Juli 1907. Sedangkan bangunan tambahan dibangun sekitar tahun 1916 dan selesai tahun 1918.

There is a historic old building in the middle of Semarang city. It is called the heart of the city of Semarang and the icon of the city of Semarang. It is a building with a thousand doors.

Located in the city of Semarang, Lawang Sewu is a tourist destination to visit. At first this building was the headquarters of the Private Railway Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NISM). The building is designed to resemble the letter L and has a large number of windows and doors, to be used as an air circulation system. Because of the large number of doors, the community is called lawang sewu or also called the thousand-door building.

People may know this building as Lawang Sewu, but did you know that that is not the real name of Lawang Sewu. At the beginning of its construction, this building was named Nederlands Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij. Meanwhile, in Javanese, Lawang Sewu means a thousand doors.

An astonishing historical site. This building complex was established in 1907 as the head office of the Dutch railway company.It has hundreds of doors, almost a thousand, that's why people call it "lawang sewu", which means thousand doors.This place is well maintained, despite of its old age.
