Moller Villa - A legendary building with over 80 years of history
Moller Villa, located at No. 30, South Shaanxi Road, Jing'an District, Shanghai, is a garden villa with a strong Nordic style.
In 1927, it was commissioned by British Jew Moller to the famous Huagai Architectural Firm at the time, and was completed in 1936. The main building is a three-story Scandinavian-style Norwegian-style building, just like a castle in a fairy tale world.
In 1941, Moller left China, leaving behind this 'dream castle' that could not be taken away. After the liberation of Moller Villa, it was nationalized and used by the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League. It is now used by the Hengshan Moller Villa Hotel.
There is a legend behind this villa: In 1926, Moller's daughter Diana had a magical dream. She dreamed that she turned into a beautiful princess and owned a 'castle like Andersen's fairy tale'. After waking up, Diana immediately drew the castle in her dream and showed it to her father.
When Erik saw his daughter's painting, he, who always loved his daughter, immediately made a decision to fulfill his daughter's dream of a castle. So Moller began to design and build the Moller Villa in 1927, which took nearly 10 years, and the villa was completed in 1936.
The main building of Moller Villa is in the Nordic architectural style, facing south to the north, with a 3-story mixed structure. The shape is varied, the roof is steep, there are three tall spires, and the spire has specially made lead tiles; the outer wall is made of brown fire-resistant bricks, and the roof is red tiles.
A fairy tale world in the city, beautiful from the inside out. I went to Shanghai a few days ago, and my daughter set the room here for us. It was good value for money and felt unusual. I have a chance to come back to addiction in the future.
Malle Villa is a private garden villa built in 1936. The main building is three-story Nordic Norwegian style. The interior decoration is very particular. The aisles and corridors are equipped with wall panels. Beautiful and exquisite patterns are carved everywhere. The indoor dome is equipped with stained glass. It is a soft color in the sun. It was originally owned by the rich Jewish merchant Mahler, and then changed hands several times. It was converted into Hengshan Mahler Villa Hotel in 2005. You can go to the restaurant for free to take pictures, or enjoy romantic European afternoon tea in the garden. The main building is three floors, with two four-slope roofs standing on the top, and the roof of the slope on the east side is nearly 20 meters high. There are arched bay windows on the top, and the spires and bay windows have relief decorations. The west side of the slope roof is about 25 meters high, the main building's south facade has three beautifully shaped, finely decorated double slope roofs and four tiger windows perpendicular to the main roof, and is intertwined with the east and west four slope roofs, like a gorgeous small palace. The decorative wood components on the top of the double slope are clearly exposed, and the white and gray seams between the A components are typical of the rural architectural style of Scandinavian style. The exterior walls of the main building are set with Taishan bricks, which are quite distinctive. The garden is located in the south of the main building, the garden is surrounded by colored tiles, and there are precious flowers and trees such as Longbai and Cedar, and there is a lawn in the middle, where a bronze horse is placed. For the beautification of the garden and easy indoor flower view, there is also a flower viewing room in the garden. The original heating equipment is installed in the room. The interior is beautifully carved and the floor is covered with colored tiles. Although the shape of the building is Nordic Norwegian, many details of the garden and building decoration have a Chinese taste. The gate is like a traditional Chinese luxury house, a Chinese-style stone lion is placed; the tall wall around the garden is paved with fire bricks, and the yellow-green Chinese glazed tiles are pressed to the top; Walking in the corridor, occasionally bumping into Buddha, like the bodhisattvas that fishermen feed on the boat, bless the owner with smooth sailing.
