Sheshan Basilica

The Basilica of the Virgin of the Lushan: also known as the Lushan Catholic Church, the Cathedral of the Lushan, and the Basilica of the Virgin of the Far East. It is located on the top of the Lushan Mountain in Songjiang District, Shanghai. It is a famous pilgrimage site for the Chinese Catholic Church and is famous for the Basilica of the Lushan Mountain. It is named for the main protection of the Virgin Mary. In 1863, the Catholic Jesuit Church built five bungalows in the middle of the mountain for missionaries to recuperate, with a small church. Later, a six-point pavilion was built on the top of the mountain to worship the Virgin Mary, place an altar, and hold mass, which is the source of the pilgrimage to Mount Lu. 1871, the hilltop lobby was built in 1873, which was in a cross shape and a mixed Chinese and Western building. Later, due to the large number of pilgrims and not enough to use, the church was demolished in 1925 and started construction in April of the same year, which took ten years and was completed in November 1935. The annexed buildings have the Virgin Pavilion, Joseph Pavilion, Sacred Heart Pavilion and 14 Bitter Road and other landscapes, located along the mountain road.

The main hall is 56 meters long and 25 meters wide from north to south, with a construction area of 1400 square meters. The building is in Latin cross shape. The height from the base to the cross is 38 meters, of which the vault is 17 meters, and the sulphur tile is 22 meters. It can accommodate about 2,000 people. This Roman transitional style church, known as "four nothings", that is, no nails, no wood, no steel, no beams, can be called asymmetrical architectural model. The colored glass is different in size and the holy image is different.

The Catholic Church is built on the top of Mount Lushan and is built by French missionaries. Its architectural features are the overall design of the mountain and the architecture, and the color is natural; the church combines Greek, Roman and Gothic architectural art, and some use traditional Chinese technology. The most eye-catching landmark in the western suburbs of Shanghai-Songjiang area is the Lushan Catholic Church, which stands at the top of Xiqiao Mountain, the highest peak inland of Shanghai (altitude 100.8 meters). Most tourists who climb Xiqiao Mountain to the top come for a glimpse of the truth. In the construction of the Catholic Church, the annexed buildings are scattered on the road from the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain. The southeast gate of the foot of the mountain is engraved with the "blessing of the church", dedicated to the churchgoers. Along the pilgrimage mountain road, there are first the Pavilion of the Virgin, José Pavilion, the Pavilion of the Sacred Heart, and the Cathedral of the Virgin of the Sun Yat-sen, and then there are fourteen twists and turns (14 pavilions with reliefs of Jesus' crucifixion), to the Basilica of the Virgin of the Virgin of the Peak.
