Site of Tagajo Castle

Taga Castle was founded by Toto Ono in the first year of the God Turtle (724) and houses the Mutsu National Palace and the Guardian Palace. In the center of the vast fortress with a side length of about 900m and a square shape, there is a government hall where important government affairs and ceremonies are held. Together with the Heijo Palace Ruins (Nara Prefecture) and Dazaifu Ruins (Fukuoka Prefecture), they are known as the three major historical sites in Japan.
