✅ Must Experience:
Shaxi Ancient Town
Free parking 🆓
A 1300-year-old ancient town in the south of the Yangtze River, retaining Ming and Qing waterside architecture, ancient alleys, quaint bridges, and the former residences of historical and cultural celebrities . Many residents live inside, with characteristic local snacks and handicrafts.
Food Recommendations:
Pickles, grass head cakes, Taicang pork floss, rice cakes, yunpian cakes, etc. Old Master Noodle Shop is a must-try, featured on Star TV and CCTV 👍🏻
Taicang Museum
No admission fee 🆓
Closed on Mondays 9:00-16:00
The museum is adjacent to the library, art gallery, and grand theater.
Inside the museum are five floors:
The collection includes ceramics, bronzes, paintings, jade, and many other types, with maritime artifacts and local scholar artifacts from the Yuan and Ming dynasties as the main features.
The first floor has two ships used by Zheng He on his voyages to the West, one of which can be boarded for a visit and photos 📸 The second floor displays Taicang's historical and cultural exhibits, including some indoor gardens and movies. The third floor houses the museum's collection, the Great Yuan Porcelain Warehouse, and the Loudong Painting School exhibit, etc. The fourth floor is the Taicang Revolutionary History Exhibition Hall.
Taicang Art Gallery
The art gallery has a very modern overall design, with micro-cement treated walls and tall staircases. The designer cleverly introduces natural light indoors, so even the first-floor exhibition hall is filled with sunlight. The courtyard is an imagistic garden, with large areas left blank and a few small but exquisite embellishments, providing a space for visitors to reflect after viewing the exhibitions.
Haiyun Dike Rothenburg Style Street
The overall architectural style can be said to have 'moved' the town of Rothenburg in Bavaria, Germany, to Taicang, perfectly restoring the town's appearance, with a strong German atmosphere coming to the fore.
Nanyuan
It was the private garden of Wang Wensu, a Ming dynasty chancellor, with a scene at every step, less ancient charm, more openness, more stunning than Suzhou gardens, and very worth visiting. If the parking lot is full, you can park in the alley next door and walk over. After visiting, you can have lunch at the Nanyuan Noodle Shop next door.
Seventy-two Ideal Village
At the entrance, there are some two-person and four-person bicycles and electric cars for rent. The place is super big, with sea views, market strolls, and crab catching, everything you could want . If you want to see the sea, you need to walk inside to see it, go for the sea breeze, and take amazing photos; if you're going to catch crabs, bring a net and be prepared to 'trek' through the mud; there's also a rice field and red windmills for photo opportunities. 📸
🍽 Dining Recommendations:
Gegengyuan
A local old shop, the signature is Taicang specialty pork floss bones, 13r each is really a good deal, sweet-tasting ribs
Nanyuan Noodle Shop
An authentic Suzhou-style noodle shop, thin noodles with toppings, also an old shop 🍜
80s Tea Restaurant
Recommended by locals, the most authentic and delicious Hong Kong-style food in Taicang, very busy during meal times!
Taicang has a very slow pace of life, very suitable as a weekend getaway from the city, with greenery everywhere, less commercialized ancient towns and villages by the river, really comfortable.
Check in Taicang Shaxi Ancient Town, free tickets, not many tourists, very clean. I like to visit the ancient town, especially the famous historical and cultural town of China. Shaxi Ancient Town is one of them. I will have the opportunity to go and see it again in the future.
Shaxi Town, Taicang City, the second batch of famous Chinese historical and cultural towns. There are many ancient towns in the Yangtze River Delta. Although Shaxi Ancient Town is not famous, it is worth a visit. Unfortunately, the night tour of Shaxi Ancient Town feels average, and the local night scene needs to be made more beautiful. Meat pine is a specialty of Taicang, and there are many stalls selling meat pine in the ancient town.
An ancient town that has not been fully developed, no tickets, suitable for leisure travel. When I passed by, I came to visit. There were very few people. The shops on the street were similar to the big bottom of other scenic spots. There were various snacks and snacks.
Shaxi Ancient Town is located in the middle of Taicang City, an ancient town of Jiangnan water town with a history of more than 1300 years. Shaxi Ancient Town area preserves the Ming and Qing waterfront buildings and long ancient streets, ancient alleys, ancient bridges and historical and cultural famous residences. Walking through the sand stream with a history of more than 1300 years, the simple charm of Jiangnan Town is exuded everywhere.
The ancient town of Shaxi in Taicang is not too large, but it is more original and has a strong life atmosphere. There are no signs of overdevelopment. The old house, stone street, small bridge and flowing water... give people a very grounded feeling.
