Note: Choosing a Stargazing Guided Tour My subjective personal opinion is I DO NOT recommend the 2026 DSJ $2300 package. The guided portion is quite basic, the other stargazing elements feel pieced together without a cohesive experience, and it is not actually on Mt John, but located within a park near the town center.

There were two trekking courses at Lake Tekapo: a 1-hour trail and a 2-hour trail. I tried both, and the views on the 2-hour trail were way, way!! better. The 2-hour trail wraps around the lake, so it's a bit longer, but it was totally worth it. I highly! recommend the 2-hour trail (one-way). It is a bit steep, though, so it was a little challenging~! And the final stop of the trek is Astro Café! The view was absolutely amazing~ The coffee was delicious, too!
