#easytravelpost Fajã de Lopes Dias sits between João Dias and São João on the south coast, reached by a cliff-top path from the Lajes–Fajã Grande road at the km18–19 bend (same turn zone as Lopo Vaz, but the eastern fork). I parked at the Lopo Vaz viewpoint, walked the cliff top east 35 min, dropped at 08:00 in June.

The cliff moss is the coastal path ledge: Racomitrium and Polytrichum on the wind-clipped basalt where the path cuts, Sphagnum in the gully the path crosses, and the fajã's single ruin has Fissidens on the north wall—Lopes Dias is drier than Lopo Vaz (less spring), so the moss is stunted, silver-grey, not green. I reached the fajã at 08:50, the moss cool to the touch, a common tern over the surf, the basalt pebbles ringing underfoot. The path is unmarked after the first 10 min—cairns only.

Mistake: I did Lopes Dias and Lopo Vaz same morning and ran out of water by 11:00—pick one south fajã per dawn, they're each a 2-hr round trip. Another: I wore a windbreaker and the south cliff funneled the nortada through it; pack a hard shell, the Atlantic edge is no joke. Would you walk Lopes Dias cliff path for the stunted-moss basalt ledge at 08:00, or commit Lopo Vaz's 300 steps for the green meadow instead?
