It's actually in Guangxi, the "Altay" for people from Guangdong! You get it! No need to fly to Xinjiang. Leave from Guangzhou for a weekend round trip and see the same alpine meadows, blue-green lakes, and windmills everywhere! The best part is it's free! As a working professional, I've tested this: leave after work on Friday, return on Sunday, and it's not rushed at all!
📍 Location: Chaping Reservoir, Quanzhou County, Guilin, Guangxi (Navigate to "Quanzhou Tianhu Chaping Hotel")
🚗 Transportation (from Guangzhou):
Friday Guangzhou South → Guilin North Station, then Guilin North → Quanzhou Station (30 mins). After exiting the station, take a taxi to your hotel.
⛺ Accommodation:
· You can also stay in Quanzhou County (around 100+ per person), which offers better value.
🗺️ Saturday itinerary:
Morning: Depart after breakfast at the hotel → Navigate to Chaping Hotel (Free parking! But spaces are limited, so arrive early).
Hiking route (beginner-friendly!):
· Hike about 3 km to the reservoir; it takes about 1 hour with stops for photos.
Along the way, alpine meadows fill your view, the lake water is as blue as a gemstone, and there are vast cedar forests and windmills along the ridges! Visit in June–July to catch the fields of small yellow flowers covering the mountains!
📸 Photo spots:
· Dam overlook: S-shaped reservoir + windmill mountain in one frame; use a wide-angle lens.
· "Window to Altay": A popular social media spot; the light is gorgeous in the morning or afternoon.
· Running in the meadow/back view: Every shot is wallpaper-worthy.
· Bring a drone! The bird's-eye view is legendary.
Sunday: Sleep in. If you like the local vibe, take a leisurely stroll through the market to buy some things, then head back in the afternoon.
⚠️ Honest tips:
1. Do not try to drive a low-clearance car up the mountain! The last stretch of the dirt road is very steep; it's recommended to park at the hotel and hike up.
2. Be careful ‼️ The altitude is nearly 2,123.4 meters, and the sun is intense.
3. Wear non-slip hiking shoes; don't wear white sneakers to "survive the ordeal."
4. Mountain weather is changeable; bring a light jacket.
5. There are no shops along the way; bring enough water and snacks.
6. Take all your trash with you! Practice Leave No Trace; don't leave "souvenirs" in such a beautiful place.
7. Download offline maps in advance; be prepared for signal loss on the mountain.
Seriously, Xinjiang is far, but Chaping is close. No filters needed; this place is wild, quiet, and beautiful enough on its own. 🏃‍♀️

While the rest of the country is baking in a heatwave, I spent a 21°C summer in Dayaoshan Panwangjie, Guangxi.
Lush green mountains greet you, and cool breezes carry the sweet scent of plants—it's truly "natural air conditioning" gifted by nature.
Watch the sea of clouds after the rain, take a gentle mountain hike, and feel your body and mind completely refreshed.
What amazed me most, though, was stumbling upon the weekend Yao ethnic activities. I was fully immersed and had such a blast~
I highly recommend that everyone visiting Dayaoshan experience this.
·
📍: Dayaoshan Panwangjie Scenic Area, Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County, Laibin City, Guangxi
🚄: For self-driving, navigate to "Dayaoshan Panwangjie Scenic Area Parking Lot"; take high-speed rail to Liuzhou Station or Laibin, then carpool/charter a car for about 1.5–2 hours to get there directly, or take a city bus.
·
⛰️ Itinerary: Cable car upper station ➡️ Upper line tour ➡️ Panwangjie elevator to lower line ➡️ Panwang Square interactive experience ➡️ Lower line tour ➡️ Yaoshan Market ➡️ Dayaoshan elevator up the mountain ➡️ Exchange gifts at Ayao's Shop 🎁 ➡️ Cable car down the mountain
⭐️ Highly recommended!
Eat your fill of seasonal Guangxi fruits.
.
🍦 Next, head to Panwang Square—brave the "Cooling Tower" in a timed climbing challenge to grab popsicles. The highest score wins, and after the competition, the popsicle tower is open for everyone to grab free popsicles!
.
🍵 The herbal tea challenge is even more exciting. The special Yaoshan herbal tea comes in three levels: slightly bitter, medium bitter, and extremely bitter. Win the challenge to earn Panwang Coins. I drank 6 cups in a row without changing my expression—my poker face was on point~ 😎
.
🎎 The highlight is the Yao cultural experience—the "Panwang Anthem" live performance. Follow the Yao people as they express emotions through folk songs, join the Panwang parade, and dance the Panwang dance. There's also the "Yao Mountain Groom-marrying" experience, where you can learn about the unique Yao custom of matrilocal marriage! The Yao prince Pan 92 threw the embroidered ball~ unfortunately, I didn't catch it 😭
🎁 The biggest surprise was the summer blind box NPC interaction—I drew "Village Chief" (a bit of a pity I didn't get the muscular male model, but being the Village Chief's daughter and dancing together wasn't bad~), the interaction was super fun!
Finally, I went to Ayao's Shop to exchange the Panwang Coins I won for small gifts. Perfect!
🌅 In the evening, there's a sunset concert by the cliff. Sunset, evening breeze, folk music—it's so romantic I didn't want to leave.
.
📝 Tips
👗 Outfit: Comfortable, casual shoes. It's windy at high altitudes, so bring a light jacket.
🕐 Time needed: Reserve 3–6 hours. Activities are concentrated on weekends, so it's recommended to visit then.
🏠 Accommodation: Stay at a homestay down the mountain at night. It's cool even without air conditioning—perfect for a summer wellness retreat!

I would call this hotel the best value in Yangshuo.
It costs over 100 per person, and it actually just opened in 2025.
The room was much bigger than expected, and the amenities were well-equipped. The design style is quite unique compared to the surrounding ones. After seeing too many white-themed homestays in Yangshuo, this one with its pink elements and stylish decor was a breath of fresh air. You can tell the owner really put in the effort. I booked it because I saw the pink theme, which is great for photos.
The location is also great. It’s not far from the attractions, but it’s not on the main street, so it’s very quiet at night and you won’t be disturbed by the bar street or tourists.
It’s a 5-minute walk to "The Romantic Show of Guilin" performance venue.
I saw the Hangzhou Songcheng version over a decade ago, so I wasn't too interested this time. By comparison, I’d recommend "Impression Sanjie Liu" more. With the real landscape as a backdrop and the night lights reflecting on the river, the viewing experience is much more stunning.
The hotel breakfast was also richer than expected, and they even had rice noodles.
After eating, sitting by the fields with a cup of coffee, feeling the breeze, and looking at the distant mountains, the pace of life just slows down.
The hotel is a 10-minute taxi ride from the Ten-Mile Gallery, and bamboo rafting for sightseeing is also nearby.
Others take the main roads, and we take the back roads. Others look at attractions, and we look at the scenery.
Riding slowly through fields, into villages, and along the Yulong River, we ended up seeing a lot of scenery not mentioned in any travel guides.
Sometimes the most interesting part of traveling isn't how many attractions you check off, but those unexpected surprises.
