I feel lucky every time I travel alone. For example, the weather is super nice today, and the lake water is very blue. The moment I saw Lake Sevan☝️ “Oh my, this rivals Lake Sailimu!” Here, you must allow yourself to slow down. At an altitude of 1900 meters, slowly climb over two hundred stone steps to the top. The passage is narrow, so you have to walk slowly into Sevan Monastery to explore. Walk along the ridge⛰️, then slowly walk to the end of the island. At this moment, you will be surrounded by a 360-degree deep blue. Prepare a sun hat and lie flat on the grass🏝️. The wind carries the coolness of the lake, coming in waves. Just returned from the South Caucasus, and I have to say, Armenia has such lasting charm. Every time I travel, friends remind me, "Stop posting beautiful photos, come back soon!" But... It's not that I don't want to come back, it's just that Armenia is too beautiful! Lake Sevan: the "Mirror of the Caucasus"
As the first stop of the "Caucasus Tour", Lake Sevan, the world's second highest freshwater lake, has soul-piercing blue water and is intoxicatingly beautiful. Let’s get back to the topic of “Lake Sevan”. Among the three sacred lakes in ancient Armenia, only Lake Sevan remains in the territory of modern Armenia. Unfortunately, the other two, one is in Turkey today, and the other is in Iran. It can be seen that the remaining Lake Sevan has a lofty status. On the peninsula in the northwest corner of the lake there is an ancient Armenian monastery built in the 4th century - Sevanavank Monastery. ⛪ Sevanavank: a monastery for guilty monks
People didn't come here for the view. They sent people here for their sins. The monastery on Sevan Island was strict and intended primarily for monks from Etchmiadzin who had committed some offense. In 1830, the French traveler Jean-Marie Chopin described the local regime briefly: no meat, no wine, no youth, and no women. Today, it is one of the most visited places in Armenia. But the island has long ceased to be an island. 🏝 An Island From Under Which the Water Has Receded The monastery was founded in 874 by Princess Mariam, daughter of Ashot I. It stood on an island. During Soviet times, Sevan's water was used to irrigate the Ararat Valley and power a cascade of hydroelectric power plants on the Hrazdan River. The lake level dropped by approximately 20 meters, and the island merged with the shore. That's why old books refer to it as an "island monastery," but you'll arrive by car at the parking lot at the foot of the stairs. At the top are two small dark stone churches, Surb Arakelots and Surb Astvatsatsin, and nearby are khachkars and the ruins of a gavit. The lake lies at an altitude of about 1,900 meters. The light here is harsh and mountainous: the water is sometimes deep blue, sometimes steely when the clouds roll in. There's almost a constant wind, and from above, you can see the peninsula's curved shoreline. 🧗 The Ascent From the parking lot, 200-230 steps lead up. At this altitude, they feel steeper than they look, so go slowly and don't try to be a hero. Entry is free: this is a functioning monastery, not a museum with a ticket office. Arrive during daylight hours. 🚌 How to get there from Yerevan Sevanavank is 65-70 km away along the M4 highway; by car or taxi, it's about an hour and a half. A budget option: take a minibus from Yerevan's Northern Bus Station to the town of Sevan. Buses run from approximately 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM, with the journey time being approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. Pay the driver in drams. Important: the minibus will take you to the city, not the monastery. The peninsula is still a few kilometers away; the easiest way is to call a taxi through an app. 💡 Lifehacks · Arrive early, before the tour groups from Yerevan. The light is softer in the morning, and the stairs are clearer. · Wear a windbreaker, even in August. At altitude, wind, coolness, and harsh sun can all happen in the same day; sunscreen is also useful. · Dress modestly, don't use flashlights in churches, and don't photograph worshipers without permission. · Walk around the peninsula. On the southern shore is the rest home of the Writers' Union of Armenia, and on the northern shore are the new buildings of the seminary. The presidential summer residence occupies the eastern shore. · About fish. Ishkhan, the Sevan trout, is an endangered species; commercial fishing has long been banned.
