Departing from Beijing | Chasing autumn during the National Day holiday, a 6-day, 5-night hidden gem route — traveler post in Zhangbei

Departing from Beijing | Chasing autumn during the National Day holiday, a 6-day, 5-night hidden gem route

I took this small loop at the end of August this year and loved it ❤️. I plan to do it again during the National Day holiday to chase the autumn, and I'm sharing it for your reference~ Taking this route perfectly avoids the crowds 🚫, bypasses traffic jams 🚗, and lets you enjoy the autumn scenery all to yourself 🍂. This hidden gem route is the best! Enjoy the desolation and tranquility of Chifeng 🌄, the splendor of autumn in Ulan Butong 🍁, the vastness of the Taipusi Banner grasslands and the most beautiful Emerald Lake 💎, check in at Swan Castle 🏰, and finish with the golden birch forests of the Grassland Sky Road 🌳. 🚗 Self-driving the whole way, good road conditions, well-equipped with charging stations, suitable for both sedans and EVs ✅ Ulan Nuoer, Taipusi Banner P1, 2, 3, 4, 15, 16 Xiangshui Lotus Pond P5, 6 Qiguo Mountain P7, 8, 9, 10 Kulun Nuoer (Swan Lake) P11, 12 Daqing Mountain P13, 14 Grassland Sky Road P17 🗺️ Route Day 1️⃣: Beijing → Chifeng → Chifeng Museum + Liao Dynasty History Museum → Stay in Chifeng Day 2️⃣: Zhenxing Morning Market for supplies 🥣 → Ongniud Banner (Home of the First Dragon of China) → Qiguo Mountain + Zhaomiao Temple → Stay in Baarin Left Banner Day 3️⃣: Shangjing Ruins of the Liao Dynasty and Museum → Daqing Mountain (Goulaochang) → Stay in Jingpeng Town Day 4️⃣: Ulan Butong Sumu → Yudaokou Grassland Forest Scenic Area → Stay in Duolun County (drive along the road, do not enter the scenic area) Day 5️⃣: Huizong Temple → Shitiao Mountain, Taipusi Banner → Ulan Nuoer (Emerald Lake) → Kulun Nuoer (Swan Castle sunset 🌅) → Stay in Guyuan County Day 6️⃣: Buy yogurt and milk skin at Lanqi Xinyuan 🥛 → Grassland Sky Road (Guyuan section + Zhangbei section) → Return to Beijing 🌟 Scenery along the way Chifeng Section 🏔️ Qiguo Mountain's Quaternary glacial potholes, Daqing Mountain's grassland cracks that look like something out of Zelda 💫, and the tranquil, serene reclining Buddha in the thousand-year-old Liao caves 🙏 Taipusi Banner Section 🌾 Vast grasslands 🌿, wild lakes with water birds 🦢, cows and horses by the roadside 🐄. Roll down the car windows, and the wind smells of dried grass and sunshine 🌞 Ulan Butong Section (reverse route) 🎨 Splendor and poetry coexist! Golden birch forests ✨, rolling grasslands, cattle and sheep like scattered musical notes 🎵. You don't need to enter the scenic area; just driving along the road is like a painting 🖼️ Sky Road Section (reverse route) 🌬️ Windmills 🎡, terraced fields 🌾, and golden grasslands. Driving the reverse route from Guyuan means fewer cars and wilder scenery. Stop and take photos whenever you want 📸 🍽️ Hidden gem food spots · *Ahadu Mongolian Restaurant**: Mongolian food in Taipusi Banner. I've been going there for ten years. Hand-grabbed meat + a big pot of milk tea 🥩☕. The taste of the grasslands is absolutely amazing! · *Lanqi Xinyuan**: A small shop on the edge of Guyuan County. The yogurt and milk skin are the best I've ever had 🥛✨ 📝 Practical Tips ▫️National Day temperatures: Chifeng city in October is about 5–18°C, Baarin Left Banner is about 0–15°C, Jingpeng Town is about -2–12°C, Duolun is about -5–10°C, and Guyuan is about -8–8°C. Large temperature difference between day and night 🌡️, bring a light down jacket + a thick coat 🧥 ▫️Daqing Mountain: You need to take a detour during restricted hours, but you can enter directly before 7 AM. Or navigate to "Mongolian Camp" (Menggu Yingzi) for 10 yuan/car, and you can enter directly without restrictions ✅ ▫️Ulan Butong: The best autumn scenery is from late September to early October 🍁. Just drive along the road; no need to enter the scenic area 🎉

Guide to Popular Attractions in Hebei | 36 Places Worth Visiting — traveler post in Zhangbei

Guide to Popular Attractions in Hebei | 36 Places Worth Visiting

Hebei has plenty of fun places to explore, from the Great Wall and ancient cities to the sea, grasslands, and mountains. Don't just follow the crowds—choose destinations that match your interests and save this guide before you head out. 🏯Prefer historical sites | Experience the thousand-year history of Yan and Zhao Chengde Mountain Resort, Jinshanling Great Wall, Zhengding Ancient City, Shanhaiguan, and Guangfu Ancient City. Wander through ancient cities and historic buildings to soak in the rich history. For accommodation, Chengde city offers chain hotels for CNY 200–350/night and homestays for CNY 300–500. Zhengding County offers better value at CNY 150–260/night. Since distances between cities are significant, driving is recommended for groups, while solo travelers might prefer high-speed rail combined with short taxi rides. A 2-day historical itinerary costs about CNY 600–900 per person. 🌊Looking for a relaxing seaside vacation | Slow-paced coastal life in Qinhuangdao Beidaihe, Laolongtou, Pigeon Nest Park, and Xianluo Island. The gentle beaches are perfect for strolling, Laolongtou offers views of the Great Wall meeting the sea, Pigeon Nest is ideal for watching the sunrise over the ocean, and the cross-sea cable car at Xianluo Island is great for photos. Accommodation is concentrated in Beidaihe, with off-season homestays costing CNY 180–300, though prices rise in the summer. Local buses and taxis are convenient. A 2-day coastal itinerary costs about CNY 700–1,100 per person. 🌾Chasing autumn scenery | Immersive grassland routes Grassland Sky Road, Saihanba, and Mulan Paddock. In autumn, the forests turn golden and orange-red. Driving allows you to stop and enjoy the view whenever you like, with birch forests and grasslands creating a picturesque backdrop. Public transport in the Bashang area is limited, so driving is highly recommended. Local inns cost CNY 260–400/night, though rooms can be scarce during holidays. Temperatures in Bashang fluctuate significantly between day and night. A 2–3 day itinerary costs about CNY 800–1,300 per person. 🏞️Weekend mountain and water getaways | Natural scenery around Baoding Baiyangdian, Baishi Mountain, and Yesanpo. Take a boat through the reed marshes at Baiyangdian, explore the unique peaks and hanging plank roads at Baishi Mountain, or enjoy the canyons and streams at Yesanpo—perfect for a short nature getaway. You can stay in local farmhouses near the scenic areas or in county hotels, with farmhouses costing CNY 120–220/night. Since the attractions are spread out, driving is recommended. A 2-day nature itinerary costs about CNY 500–800 per person. 🎪A mix of culture and leisure | Relaxing options for family trips Eastern Qing Tombs in Tangshan, Hetou Old Street in Cangzhou, Wuqiao Acrobatic World, and Hengshui Lake. Explore history at the royal tombs, sample local snacks on the old street, enjoy acrobatic performances suitable for all ages, or take a relaxing walk around Hengshui Lake. There is a wide range of city hotels, mostly costing CNY 160–300/night, and public transport within the city is convenient. A 2-day itinerary costs about CNY 600–900 per person. 💡Travel tips Hebei covers a large area with significant distances between regions. If your vacation time is limited, don't try to visit everything at once. Choose one main route—such as Chengde, Qinhuangdao, Zhangjiakou, or the area around Shijiazhuang—to minimize travel time and improve your experience. The scenery varies by season: Bashang is most beautiful in autumn, the seaside is best in summer, and ancient cities and historical sites can be visited year-round. Check the opening status of scenic spots before you leave and book your accommodation in advance.

Road trip near Beijing / Pristine Ming and Qing dynasty castles and a Ming dynasty post town — traveler post in Zhangbei

Road trip near Beijing / Pristine Ming and Qing dynasty castles and a Ming dynasty post town

I planned a 3-day, 2-night road trip. The second half of the trip took me to Zhangjiakou Fort and Jimingyi, which share one thing in common: almost zero commercialization! I love the sense of history and authenticity here; they truly deserve to be called living Ming and Qing dynasty ancient towns! If you love ancient architecture and historic dwellings, you should definitely check them out. Itinerary: Day 1: Beijing – Huapiling – Yehuoling – Bailong Cave – Shangyi Day 2: Shangyi – Wolong Peak – Chahan'naoer Wetland – Dajing Gate – Zhangjiakou Fort Day 3: Zhangjiakou Fort – Jimingyi – Beijing This note mainly covers the cultural attractions of the second half of the trip: 📍 Dajing Gate One of the four major passes of the Great Wall (Shanhaiguan, Juyongguan, Jiayuguan, and Dajing Gate). Admission to the gate and city wall is free, but you need to buy a ticket to climb the Great Wall, which costs 13 yuan/person. 📍 Zhangjiakou Fort No admission fee. Locals call it "Baozili." Inside the town, there is the Wenchang Pavilion, Yuhuang Pavilion, Luncai Academy, Finance Museum, Koupi Museum, and old Shanxi merchant residences. Gulou East Street and West Street are scattered with many three-section courtyard houses and old residences that blend Chinese and Western styles, retaining a sense of daily life and local atmosphere. There are also several vacant courtyards and dwellings that are severely damaged, with collapsed roofs and overgrown grass everywhere. How to protect and utilize the buildings within the fort is indeed an urgent matter. 📍 Jimingyi Admission: 40 yuan/person It is the largest and best-preserved ancient Ming dynasty post town in China. People still live inside the town, and it has very low commercialization. Inside, there is the Post Museum, Taishan Palace, Postmaster's Office, Caishen Temple, Dragon King Temple, etc. The Caishen Temple and Dragon King Temple contain Ming dynasty murals, which are exquisitely decorated with gilded relief. You can climb the city wall to overlook the post town. No noisy shops, loess city walls, Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, and elderly people sitting at their doorways cooling off—all confirm the profound history of this ancient town. This place is very suitable for tourists who like historical sites and want to avoid crowds. Practical travel tips: 🚗 Road trip: These attractions can be visited in one day. 👗 Outfit: Wear non-slip shoes as the city wall steps are steep; Hanfu/New Chinese style outfits look great in photos.

Grass Skyline

The Grassland Sky Road is a renowned summer resort in Zhangjiakou. With an average altitude of 1300 meters, it boasts alpine meadows and flower fields along the way. Although it has become quite commercialized, the free natural scenery makes the trip worthwhile.

Zhangbei Bashang Grassland

Mei Jie's 71st day of traveling in China, Zhangjiakou Zhangbei Bashang Grassland Heavenly Road At the junction of Zhangbei County and Chongli District in Zhangjiakou, there is a winding asphalt road of more than 100 kilometers. It stretches across the mountains with the ups and downs of the mountains. The scenery on both sides of the road is beautiful, with rivers, mountains, meadows and terraces, like a hundred-mile painting! The blue sky connects with it, and the white clouds echo with it, just like walking on the road to heaven! The most suitable season for Bashang Grassland is from the end of June to the end of September. The air on the grassland is pure, there is little pollution, and it is also cool in summer. I was unlucky today. It was raining intermittently on Bashang. The sky was always overcast, and occasionally the sun poured down through the clouds, which was a different taste. I still felt cool wearing long sleeves, it is worthy of being a summer resort~

Yehuli Fort Scenic Area

It's fun, especially the tunnel fortifications, which allow you to experience the scenes of the war back then. People are smart and wise, and the underground is a completely different world. Everything is well considered, self-contained, safe and hidden. I recommend that all children go and see it. It is a very good red education base.

Zhangbei Zhongdu Grasslands

The grassland scenery is beautiful, not many people, the iron flower making at night is very exciting, basically come to see the performance, just looking at the grass is not interesting. There are villages around, it is convenient to live, you don't have to live in the scenic area, it is also close to the Tianlu.

Huapiling

Huapiling is the western entrance of Zhangbei Grassland Tianlu. It is about two hours' drive from downtown Beijing. The area is not large. It takes about 20 minutes to drive to the entrance of Tianlu after getting off the highway. There are many unique farmhouses with restaurants and accommodation along the way.

Yuan Zhongdu Site

冬天的时候千万不要来到元中都遗址,一是因为这边非常荒凉,而是因为这个景点却不开门,不过我们围着外面的围栏转了一圈,拍了一些照片,感觉还是挺震撼的,毕竟是大元时候的中都
