Lake Hamana

Lake Hamana is located in the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture, on the border with Aichi Prefecture. It was a freshwater lake in ancient times. Due to an earthquake at the end of the 15th century, the sand bar that closed the mouth of the lake collapsed, and it became a lake connected to Yuanzhou Beach. Since then, due to the tsunami in the 16th century, the mouth of the lake was washed wider, and it became a saltwater lake with a complex shoreline as it is today. On the east bank of Lake Hamana is a relatively new hot spring town developed in the middle of the 20th century, Kanzanji Onsen. Near Kanzanji Onsen is the Hamamatsu Flower Park, which is planted with about 3,000 species and more than 100,000 plants.
