The Napa Sea that cannot be navigated by GPS, explained clearly in an article
Actually, I was a bit resistant to going to Napa Sea before, because my impression of it from my first visit to Shangri-La 15 years ago was quite average. As a seasonal lake, Napa Sea, also known as Yila Grassland, had little water. Other than cattle, sheep, and highland barley racks, it was just the most common highland scenery.
This time, I might have just hit the right season, and Napa Sea had regained its lake-like appearance. Although its water color couldn't match that of Lugu Lake, it was still quite stunning against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds. Plus, the road around the lake has been repaired, which really improved the experience.
However, it's important to note that to take the road around the lake, you can't just navigate to 'Napa Sea,' or you'll end up at the lakeside where they charge for horseback riding. For self-driving, it's recommended to navigate to 'Halfway Boil·White Pagoda·Coffee,' which is roughly the midpoint of the lake road, and from there you definitely won't go wrong.
It's suggested to drive around the lake clockwise, so you're traveling along the lake rather than across the road. Along the entire lake road, the southern part of Napa Sea is more like the grass sea of Lugu Lake, a typical wetland landscape, while the northern part is closer to the bright sea section of Lugu Lake, with lake and mountain views, and rippling blue waves.
If you're driving clockwise around the lake, the following points are worth stopping at for a visit:
✅ Navigation point 'Shika Snow Mountain': There's no need to actually go to the scenic area, which isn't open anyway. The point is to take the straight road leading to the scenic area, flanked by grasslands and highland barley racks, with a solitary white pagoda, and the snow mountain in the background makes for a great photo.
✅ Navigation point 'Jiaorong Horse Riding Field': You can park in the free parking lot next to the highway. This place is basically at the junction of the grass sea and the bright sea, and the path extending into the lake allows for photos of different scenery on each side. You can also hold a lamb for photos here, which should be quite appealing to children.
✅ Navigation point 'Halfway Boil·White Pagoda·Coffee': You can park in the free parking lot next to the white pagoda. Here you can walk along the stone dam all the way to Napa Sea, and from certain angles, you can take photos that give the impression of walking on water. The coffee shop itself also has an internet-famous quality, with the white building providing a great backdrop for photos taken from inside out or on the terrace overlooking Napa Sea.
✅ Navigation point 'Alpine Botanical Garden': You don't necessarily have to go up to the Alpine Botanical Garden. We took photos on the mountain opposite the Gongbi Horse Field, which was also very beautiful, allowing you to capture Napa Sea and the surrounding road in the lens.
✅ Navigation point 'Napa Sea Viewing Platform': It's not on the lake road, but on the way to Deqin. If you have enough time or are heading to Meili Snow Mountain, you can stop here for photos. It's the best place to capture a panoramic view of Napa Sea.
Napa Sea, Shangri-La, Diqing, Yunnan. Located in an important location in the bird migration channel of Hengduan Mountain. Two of the eight world-recognized bird migration routes pass through here. Special geographical location and seasonal characteristics, become an important bird station in the Hengduan Mountain, where about 370 species of birds live and breed.
Napa Sea is located 8 kilometers northwest of Shangri-La, at an altitude of 3266 meters. Chinese meaning "the lake behind the forest" is surrounded by three snow-capped mountains of Shika, Yeka and Xinyala, and is connected with the Yila grassland. It is the largest meadow in Shangri-La. The scenery is the best in June and July!
The Napa Sea around the lake is free, and the scenery along the way is very good. Although there is no green grass in winter, the blue sky and white clouds are also beautiful on the lake. Many water birds and seagulls live in harmony with nature. There is no experience of riding yak and cuddling sheep and taking pictures, so I am not interested in this. The water level is low in winter, and there is no need to wading in the water section. All cars can pass, and it is better to open clockwise.
Napahai is the largest grassland in Zhongdian County and one of the most scenic spots with high plateau characteristics. Due to the care of Tibetans, whenever autumn comes, many birds visit here, such as black-necked cranes, yellow ducks, spotted heads flying high and low over the grassland, and the scene is quite favorite. In summer, the water and grass are full, and the grassland is full of flowers. Sheep, cattle, and horses eat grass in groups, and the grassland is integrated. In the winter and spring dry season, the lake shrinks and even drys up, turning into a large swamp. At the entrance of the scenic spot, there are eight-petal lotus white towers, such as only two in the world, the other in India. Napa Sea means "the lake next to the forest", Napa Hai Tibetan is called "Napacuo", Chinese means "the lake behind the forest". Every May, the grassland spit out sprouts, and the Napa grassland is already green grass. At the beginning of June, various wild flowers competed to open, and the vast grasslands and Qionghua grass competed for beauty. Herds of cattle and sheep undulate with the sea of grass, such as sinking and floating in the sea. The vast field is surrounded by the grassland beauty of "wind grass and low see cattle and sheep". The three snow-capped mountains of Shika, Shika and Sinjara stand tall in the west. Snow-capped mountains, grasslands, cattle and sheep form the scenery of Saibei in the southwest. Napahai is located in the northwest of Shangri-La County, 8 kilometers away from the county seat. It is a seasonal alpine lake and a rare subheat alpine marshes and marsh meadow in Yunnan Province. You can bring your own tent and grassland land as companion, and whisper with the stars ......
First of all, here is free, natural scenery! As for horse riding, you can choose there. In fact, it is not a grassland, but it is still very good. It is best to rent an electric car, and then have time to slowly enjoy the mountains, blue sky, white clouds, grass, creeks.
