Walking the Landscape: The Arnside to Beetham Coffin Route | Arnside
Cultural Experiences
We're walking one of the most popular routes in the National Landscape, taking a trip to the fairy steps. Local legend says if you can make it up the narrow ravine without touching the sides the fairies will grant you a wish! This route follows the old coffin route from Arnside to Beetham, and we'll point out various features of historic interest along the way.
This 11.5km route is of moderate difficulty, using paths with uneven ground, inclines and several stiles. The route includes several steep inclines. The walk will last for approx. 4-5 hours. There will be an opportunity to break for lunch in Beetham, and the walk will finish near Arnside Promenade, where there are shops, cafes and toilets.
Please bring:
suitable clothing, including layers and a waterproof jacket
water / drinks
food (either snacks for energy or a pack up) - and remember to have a big breakfast!
sunscreen (if sunny)
walking boots
spare socks (just in case)
a phone
walking poles (if usually used)
This route includes some sections with cattle grazing, therefore we ask that you do not bring dogs on this walk.
An e-mail with details about meeting points and other information will be sent out prior to the event. We're meeting at the National Landscape Office at Arnside Railway Station, and we'd like to encourage as many people as possible to attend by train.
