Emerita Professor of English and African American Studies Marilyn Sanders Mobley visits the American Writers Museum to discuss her recent book Toni Morrison and the Geopoetics of Place, Race, and Be/longing, which Henry Louis Gates, Jr. calls a powerful and learned meditation, and one that deserves a prominent place in the field of Morrison studies. Mobley's approach is as interdisciplinary, intersectional, nuanced, and complex as Morrison's. She combines textual analysis with a study of Morrison's cultural politics and narrative poetics and describes how Morrison engages with both history and the present political moment. Informed by research in geocriticism, spatial literary studies, African American literary studies, and Black feminist studies at the intersection of poetics and cultural politics, Mobley identifies four narrative strategies that illuminate how Morrison creates such spaces in her fiction; what these spaces say about her understanding of place, race, and belonging; and how they constitute a way to read and re-read her work. West Town Social Club's Rooftop Soccer Mini Tournament has been created specifically with individual players in mind--no need to pay for a whole team and beg your hesitant friends to join! All players in this tournament are registered as individuals, and will be assigned to one of four (4) teams based on self-ratings--we do our best to make sure all teams are evenly talented. Whether you are a beginner or an expert soccer player, this event is all about allowing everyone to play in a non-competitive, fun environment. Why? Because at West Town Social Club, we're all about having a good time! This event will be co-ed, so that everyone has a chance to play. FORMAT We'll be playing on a futsal-sized 5-on-5 field on a parking garage rooftop, where each team will play five (5) 10-minute games over the course of 2 hours.
