The Future of the Image | QSS Artist Studios

Dec 5, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Centre
Arts

This conversation takes as its stepping off point Jacques Ranciere's collection of essays The Future of the Image , which examine the place of the image in contemporary art. McKenzie has pin-pointed in the work of McKeown, Clarke and Conlon an interrogation of imagery that is at once both graphic in tendency yet foregrounded in the materiality of the studio. The essays in Ranciere's book all originated in the very early years of the 21st century; the internet was still in its infancy and the deluge of imagery we live with now had yet to occur. The conversation will examine where the artists find themselves within all of this, and how their own work contends with new ideas around the future of the image. Dougal McKenzie is a Lecturer in Painting at Belfast School of Art. He was a member of QSS from 2005 to 2016, Orchid Studios from 2016 to 2017, and PSSquared from 2017 to 2021. He is currently exhibiting at the Contemporary British Painting Prize 2024. Niamh Clarke, Jonathan Conlon and Sharon McKeown are current studio-holders at QSS, having joined in 2021, 2022 and 2019 respectively. All three are graduates of the Belfast School of Art. From Glastonbury to a 30 seater Village Hall, a night in Windsors Company is definitely not one to be missed. Shalaka Kurup Shalaka, the witty observational comedian and self-professed enthusiast of life, laughter, and love, has graced stages all over the UK, including renowned spots like Angel Comedy, Leicester Comedy Festival, and the iconic Comedy Store. A rising star, she secured a spot at the prestigious Pleasance Reserve 2023 and claimed the Roast Battle UK Champion 2023 title. Her accolades continue with the West End New Act of the Year 2023, a standout at the Leicester Comedy Festival Circuit Breaker 2023, and a commendable Runner Up at Brighton Komedia New Act 2023. Notably, she clinched the Third Place at the esteemed Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year 2023. With praise for her “impressive arsenal of cool, sardonic stand-up” from Chortle, Shalaka’s natural charm and comedic flair promise an even brighter spotlight ahead. The Seamus Heaney Centre Christmas Debate returns for 2024 with a motion obliquely inspired by the final line from 'Among School Children' by W. B. Yeats: How can we know the dancer from the dance? Our speakers, including Dr Jimmy McAleavey and Dr Trish McTighe, will look at the relationship between artists and their work, asking if we can -- or, indeed, should -- draw a line between the two. Wine and soft drinks will be served from 5:30pm for a 6pm start. Information Source: School of Arts, English and Languages | eventbrite
