Join us for a community conversation on how the question of “What is public art” will be uniquely explored at Alcove over the next 3 months. This the kickoff event will be a panel discussion local street artists NASARIMBA, musician Jonathan Chavez, spoken word poet and community-led DJs. This conversation will be moderated by Matias Martinez & the audience (aka YOU) through a Q&A! We are so excited to host a variety of programming over the Fall 2024 that includes window case activations and conversations exploring “What is Public Art?” in partnership with Calgary Arts Development. Martinez’s work combines glass, paintings, and social practices, driven by my identity and curiosity, With themes of identity, love, memories, and commonality. His organic style is influenced by emotions, daily experiences, and music. Martinez’s use a rhizomatic approach, adapting tools and ideas based on momentary/built up inspiration. My recent work explores rediscovering my Indigenous identity, inspired by ancient stories, ways of life, and myths. After being a competitive dancer most of my life and taking a much needed break, I started re-connecting with dance as a way to safely express myself and encourage others to do the same. My passion lies in creating a safe space in the studio where you can feel comfortable and confident to move in a way that feels good for you, all while breaking a sweat and having so much fun. I am a certified Latina Tribe method instructor, and I love to teach some Reggaetón & fusion classes as well.
