THE SHAMAN AND DROPOUT PSYCHOLOGIST – L.A. Premiere + Director Q&A | Philosophical Research Society

Boulevard

Theater
THE SHAMAN AND DROPOUT PSYCHOLOGIST – L.A. Premiere + Director Q&A Directed and produced by Frances Ulman Filmed in Mongolia, this documentary is an intimate portrait of an elder female shaman named Altantsetseg. We have rare, complete access to be with Altantsetseg as she prepares for, and goes into a shaman's trance. Altantsetseg explains each step of her process with us. Much of what is known about shamanism focuses on objects and rituals, because that is all the uninitiated can see. Shamans see with more than their eyes. Uniquely, the filmmaker, Frances Ulman, is also an initiated shaman, and a mentee of Altantsetseg. Previously Frances was a clinical psychologist but left it all behind when the spirits called her onto her path. This is a film about a shaman, directed by a shaman. The close, personal relationship between these two women from different parts of the world is the alchemy of the film. It allows us into spaces within shamanism others have not brought to the screen. The weaving of similarities and profound differences between Altantsetseg and Frances emerges as an exploration of shamanism and much more. We see the power of relationships, the myths of western psychology, and ways of balancing living sacredly with cellphones. Living in a world that doesn't always remember, here we shown a way home to our hearts. Running time: approx 90 min Discussion following with director Frances Ulman. Step into the shadowy world of 18th-century Europe and meet one of its most enigmatic figures: Alessandro Cagliostro. Was he a gifted healer, alchemist, and Freemason with genuine magical powers and psychic abilities? Or was he a cunning con man who preyed on the gullible and superstitious? This lecture will explore the life and legend of Cagliostro, a man who captivated high society with his claims of ancient wisdom and supernatural abilities. We'll delve into his mysterious origins, his controversial involvement in the Diamond Necklace Affair that rocked the French court or Marie Antoinette, and his tragic downfall at the hands of the Inquisition. Prepare to be intrigued as we unravel the enigma of Cagliostro. Was he a true magician or a master of deception? Bio: Michael Samu was born and raised in Joshua Tree, California, and has been a Master Mason since 2018. He is also a seeker and ceremonial magician. He provides tarot readings, writes articles on the occult and esoteric, and is currently the Organist and Lecturer In Residence for Three Great Lights Masonic Lodge #323, as well as contributing guest editor and writer for the Fraternal Review, the official masonic magazine of the Southern California Research Lodge. Brother Samu is now a collaborator with Keepers of the Word for its 2024 Mystic Lantern series, which focuses on curating talks and podcast episodes on the philosophical aspects of Masonry, the occult, and the esoteric. Author Event! Gabrielle Korn presents THE SHUTOUTS with Celia Laskey | 18604 Ventura Blvd

Dec 13, 2024 (UTC-8)
Boulevard
Arts
Literary Arts
Join us to celebrate the release of THE SHUTOUTS from author Gabrielle Korn! Gabrielle will be in conversation with Celia Laskey for this special night of reading, signing, and Q&A. ABOUT THE SHUTOUTS A brilliant queer dystopian novel from the author ofYours for the Taking, following a cast of characters on the margins of a strange and exclusive new society. The year is 2041, and it's a dangerous time to be a woman driving across the United States alone. Deadly storms and uncontrollable wildfires are pummeling the country while political tensions are rising. But Kelly's on the road anyway; she desperately needs to get back to her daughter, who she left seven years ago for a cause that she's no longer sure she believes in. Almost 40 years later, another mother, Ava, and her daughter Brook are on the run as well, from the climate change relief program known as The Inside Project, where they've spent the past 22 years being treated as lab rats. When they encounter a woman from Ava’s past on the side of the highway, the three continue on in a journey that will take them into the depths of what remains of humanity out in the wilderness. At the same time, way up North, weather conditions continue to worsen and a settlement departs in search of greener pastures, leaving behind only two members, drawn together by a circumstance and a mystery they are destined to unravel together. Set in the world of Gabrielle Korn's Yours for the Taking, The Shutouts tells the captivating story of those who have been shut out from Inside, their fight to survive, and an interconnectedness larger than all of them. ABOUT GABRIELLE KORN Gabrielle Korn is the author of three books and the former editor-in-chief of Nylon Media. Her debut novel, Yours for the Taking, was an Indie Next pick and a New York Times best book of December. Its sequel, The Shutouts, out December 3, 2024 from St. Martin's Press, has been called another winner by Publishers Weekly and a perfect blend of sadness and hope by Kirkus. Her writing has appeared across the internet since 2011, with bylines in McSweeney's, The Millions, Literary Hub, InStyle, Refinery29, Oprah Magazine, and more, as well as in the recent anthology Sluts, edited by Michelle Tea. Originally from New York, she now lives in LA with her wife where together they run the Pink Door Residency for artists and writers. ABOUT CELIA LASKEY Celia Laskey is the author of Cover Story (available March 25, 2025), So Happy for You, and Under the Rainbow, a finalist for the 2020 Center for Fiction First Novel Prize.
