About this event: This Islamic geometry workshop will explore a pattern from Islamic traditions, in particular a classic 12-fold rosette. During the session we will be using a compass and ruler to create a geometric pattern template and we will go through the process of transferring and repeating the template on to watercolour paper. The pattern we will create in class is pictured. The last part of the session will be an opportunity to explore painting techniques so you can create your own piece of work to take home. Come and celebrate our 1st Birthday! Welcome to Writer’s Block, a scratch night hosted by Sophia Griffin & Grace Barrington, where artists get to test out ideas and share works-in-progress to a group of people for feedback. It’s an intimate space where we get to talk through the knots, the sticking points, the stuck points, the “idk if this is even an idea” stages. It’s space for artists to gather; to remind ourselves of the incredible thinkers and makers in the city, and have time to connect and collaborate with each other. Sometimes, all you need is some reassurance you’re onto a good thing, or a conversation to help you crystallise what that “thing” really is. Writer’s Block means you have a whole room of creatives ready to help. - So, what’s the format? Sophia and Grace ask three different writers or makers to share something which they are writing/devising for the stage. Every writer is given a twenty minute slot; we listen to what they are working on, and then we give feedback. At the end, there’s time for drinks and socialising. Our headliner is Tom Martin, a phenomenal independent artist, and a stalwart of the Birmingham Music scene - originally hailing from Northern Ireland. He'll be joined by Ursula on violin and Ali on Cello - incredible musicians. We also have Tereza Buskova's short film, Clipping the Church, which she made a few years ago, in Erdington! This extremely powerful film is in anticipation for a brilliant procession of art she is facilitating in Walsall, 30th November, 2pm - find out more on the night. We also hear from Leni Remedios regarding her second book. A musical offering from our very own Erdington 'Traditional Sessions' - jigs, reels, hornpipes. His last two shows Leap Year and Relax were nominated for ‘Best Show’ at the Leicester Comedy Festival and has been named by Chortle as One To Watch for 2018 and 19. In 2023 he recorded his first Radio 4 special “Stuff” for BBC Radio 4 and in the same year he supported Mickey Flanagan on tour including a 10,000 seat arena show in Nottingham. In 2021 he recorded his debut for Live at the Apollo BBC1. You will have heard him as a regular guest on BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz, The Now Show, The Likely Dads and Elephant in the Room with Sarah Millican. He also appeared on The Summer Festival with Daliso Chaponda, The Comedy Club with Arthur Smith, and Knock Knock with Helen Lederer.
