Microbatics & Orientation with Winston Reynolds Philadelphia October 5-6 | North Star MMA

Oct 5, 2024 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
Yoga
Sports & Fitness
A 2-day intensive looking into Winston Reynolds movement practices. After just under a decade of teaching Winston will be heading to Philadelphia for the very first time to lead a special weekend workshop diving into his practice of microbatics & orientation. This intensive is aimed and encouraged for vocational movers or performers who have some experience taking part in a physical practice of some kind. This could range from, but isn't limited to, dance, parkour, circus, martial arts, yoga, sports and practitioners of physical therapies. *If you are not sure if your experience is appropriate, I encourage you to send me a message. The proposed practice is an accumulation of personal interpretations, and experiences gathered whilst navigating the world of movement, and takes inspiration from neuroscience, fighting, dancing, acrobatics, meditation, locomotion and partnering, to attempt to extract different ingredients from these forms and introduce both already established ideas and ongoing research into the subject of cultivating a movement practice. Winston is a member of the Ferus Animi // Terra Nova Collective, a group of cross-disciplinary craftspeople researching in the fields of human physiology and performance, through both an artistic and scientific lens. Time frame: Saturday Oct 5th 12:00 - 18:00 (break included) Sunday Oct 6th 10:00 - 16:30 (break included) Location: North Star MMA Academy, 5904 Greene Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19144 Price: Normal $400 // Early bird $325 (ends 1st September) Half-half split: Pay half the regular price early and the second installment the week before the workshop** **email alexbrazinski@gmail.com to apply for half-half split Application & Sign Up: You will receive all payment details upon booking. Please inform yourself about our refund policy before booking. (see below) This event is hosted by: Alex Brazinski About: Microbatics & Open Forms The themes will be split into a morning session and an afternoon session. MicrobaticsThe 'Microbatic' practice stems from a necessity of developing an approach to the world of acrobatics in a sustainable and somewhat holistic manner. It is partially inspired by some earlier setbacks and injuries which suggested a different tonality to the general approach. This in turn required an adaptation and evolution for the working methodologies we will explore. It forms one of the foundations of Winston’s practice and invites the practitioner to integrate the acrobatic language seamlessly into their physical vocabulary. It’s about gaining more freedom and blurring the edges between what actually defines acrobatics. The original question I held was “How can I move in whichever direction I would wish to? How can we physically decorate around the functionality of each form? This is what we will attempt to find out, through athletic development, falling, groundwork, agility protocols and partnering all intertwined. Orientation Imagine a scale: With our raw physical capacity on one side and the creativity of our mind on the other. Our aim is to find the space between these two worlds. This chapter delves into the improvisational and compositional aspects of the practice. Orientating the open forms lies at the forefront for testing what’s possible and truly exploring the endless combinations, qualities and textures that lie within us. Without the ability to improvise we never really get to taste the broader spectrum of our capacities. Through specific movement concepts, strategic limitations and open dialogue we will create a framework which enters into my own style of movement and uncovers your own potential path of approaching movement. Workshop Framework: The two main themes will be present throughout the weekend, applying interconnected themes, links, and practical scenarios in order to introduce the practitioner to the full body of work. It will be presented in the form of warm-up, synergetic, technical material, cultivation of awareness, recovery protocols, athletics and open dialogue. Refund policy: Cancellation of participation in the event is not possible and the full event cost will be charged. However, it is possible to transfer your place to another person up to 24 hours before the start of the event. If the event is canceled due to unforeseen circumstances or new covid policy participants will receive a full refund. Join us on Second Thursday at Crane Arts in celebrating the group exhibition Brotherly Lens: A Portrait of Philadelphia, featuring Eric T. Kunsman, Joseph Labolito, and Ron Tarver. About the exhibition: Brotherly Lens: A Portrait of Philadelphia presents a nuanced exploration of the city through the eyes of three distinguished photographers: Eric T. Kunsman, Joseph Labolito, and Ron Tarver. Each artist offers a distinctive perspective, capturing the essence of Philadelphia, its hidden dimensions, and its ongoing transformation. Eric T. Kunsman intricately maps the city through its phone lines, revealing the stark contrasts between neighborhoods. His work prompts a critical examination of social divides and biases, encouraging reflection on the disparities that shape urban life. Joseph Labolito provides a historical and cultural portrait of Philadelphia, documenting the daily life of its neighborhoods over three decades. His images offer a rich narrative of the city's evolution, portraying its past and present with depth and sensitivity. Ron Tarver’s work focuses on the lives of inner-city cowboys, highlighting their unique experience at the intersection of urban and rural life. Through his lens, Tarver brings to light the vibrant and complex realities of Black identities and stories within the city. Together, these photographers offer a comprehensive and introspective view of Philadelphia, inviting audiences to engage with the city’s diverse and dynamic landscape through their distinctive visions. Cover Image: Eric T. Kunsman Lifelines-Philly_0016 2018 The InLiquid Gallery is located within the Crane Arts Building, which is wheelchair accessible. Terrace Story follows the characters who suffer these repercussions and reverberations: the little family of three, their future now deeply uncertain, and those who orbit their fragile universe. The distance and love between these characters expands limitlessly, across generations. How far can the mind travel when it’s looking for something that is gone? Where do we put our loneliness, longing, and desire? What do we do with the emotions that seem to stretch beyond the body, beyond the boundaries of life and death? Based on the National Magazine Award–winning story, Hilary Leichter’s profound second novel asks how we nurture love when death looms over every moment. From one of our most innovative and daring writers, Terrace Story is an astounding meditation on loss, a reverie about extinction, and a map for where to go next.
