Voter Registration at InLiquid Gallery | InLiquid Gallery in the Crane Building
Oct 19, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Philadelphia
About the event: One PA is joining InLiquid Gallery for one final push to get Philadelphians registered to vote! Join us on Saturday October 19th from 12p – 6p to register to vote, enjoy light refreshments, and get a first look at InLiquid’s newest exhibition The Voice of The People. This exhibition highlights work by InLiquid Member Artists that are creating pieces about the current political landscape in our country. All participating artists have unique voices and perspectives on how this landscape affects them, their lives, and their loved ones. We’re partnering with One PA, an organization that has been mobilizing Pennsylvanians and getting their voices heard since 2011, to host a Voter Registration event in conjunction with our political show. What better way to activate our community than with powerful art, and powerful actions. —- About One PA: “One PA is a base building organization led by community members, creating a powerful voice for racial, economic and social justice in pennsylvania.” Mission: We are building a movement for political representation that stands for racial, economic and environmental justice and against profits over people and voter disenfranchisement. OnePA members endorse political candidates and mobilize to elect them. OnePA works to challenge discouragement that comes up in communities about our political system while we fight to protect and expand democracy and voting rights. We know that meaningful change comes from everyday people coming together to have a voice in our political system and we are deeply committed to doing this work. History: One PA was founded in 2011 as a part of SEIU’s Fight for a Fair Economy, originally called One Pittsburgh. We fought for working families in Allegheny County and worked to change the conversation about injustice and the U.S. economy. We recognized the need to build the political power of working families, and launched grassroots efforts to knock on tens of thousands of doors. We built a robust member base and directly took on structural inequality. By 2015 the pieces had come together merging the best traditions of labor, community organizing and civic engagement into a vision of a new independent organization. A year later, we expanded to Philadelphia and became One PA. Today, One PA is a formidable membership organization dedicated to building a movement for progressive, multiracial working class power with a deep focus on Black liberation. We are building a powerful political movement led by people from communities impacted by racial, economic and gender injustice. We prioritize deep leadership development and political education with our member leaders, canvassers and organizers, to center frontline experiences and build a strong movement leadership pipeline.. We fight for policy reforms that improve the lives of working families, strengthen the community, and grow our political power. About InLiquid: InLiquid is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to creating opportunities and exposure for visual artists through exhibitions in the InLiquid Gallery and satellite exhibition spaces, all while serving as a free, online, public hub that showcases Philadelphia’s vast visual arts culture. We actively promote artists’ work online by constructing public, searchable high quality pages that include contact information, artwork, resumes/bios, statements, relevant links and exhibit history. Through our numerous ongoing exhibition programs distributed throughout the city in galleries and alternative spaces, meaningful partnerships with cultural organizations and corporate clients, unique community-engaged events, and the nurturing of relationships with art collectors, we introduce and connect the quality, diversity and magnitude of our region’s visual art culture to broader audiences, thus directly impacting Philadelphia’s cultural community and economy. About The Voice of the People: The Voice of the People is a juried open-call exhibition featuring 12 InLiquid Member Artists. This exhibition invited current InLiquid artist members to submit works that explore American Politics. Each artist brings a unique artistic perspective on the political choices we make, the systems we exist within, and portrayed security within our political environment.

It wasn’t there before, and it seems to only appear when their friend Stephanie visits. A city dweller’s dream come true! But every extra bit of space has a hidden cost, and the terrace sets off a seismic chain of events, forever changing the shape of their tiny home, and the shape of the world. Terrace Story follows the characters who suffer these repercussions and reverberations: the little family of three, their future now deeply uncertain, and those who orbit their fragile universe. The distance and love between these characters expands limitlessly, across generations. How far can the mind travel when it’s looking for something that is gone? Where do we put our loneliness, longing, and desire? What do we do with the emotions that seem to stretch beyond the body, beyond the boundaries of life and death? Based on the National Magazine Award–winning story, Hilary Leichter’s profound second novel asks how we nurture love when death looms over every moment. From one of our most innovative and daring writers, Terrace Story is an astounding meditation on loss, a reverie about extinction, and a map for where to go next.

About the series is a three-part film series inspired by ICA’s current exhibition, Joanna Piotrowska: unseeing eyes, restless bodies, that highlights the various technical or thematic devices Piotrowska employs in cultivating her highly enigmatic and cinematic aesthetic. Each screening will begin with an offering that inspires close looking and ends with a group discussion moderated by a selected guest speaker. We invite participants to view the films together, exchange their perspectives, and engage in mutual learning. Film screenings will take place on September 18th, October 23rd, and November 21st. About the guest speakerJoanna Piotrowska (b. 1985) is a Polish artist based in London. She examines the human condition through performative acts and the construction of multiple ‘social landscapes’ using photography, performance and film. Family archives, self-defence manuals and psychotherapeutic methods are used as reference points as Piotrowska explores the complex roles which play out in everyday performance. Her psychologically charged photographs probe human behaviour and the dynamics of familial relations, exploring intimacy, violence, control, and self-protection. The artist reveals moments of care as well as hierarchies of power, anxieties, and imposed conventions that play out in the domestic sphere.
