Help us build out the vision of next year's leaders. ABOUT THE BOOK From standup comedian Youngmi Mayer, an unforgettable memoir written with “raw, enviable freedom that simply floors you,” interrogating whiteness, gender, and sexuality in America, navigating a tumultuous childhood in Korea and Saipan, and coming to terms with her parents’ shortcomings (Michelle Zauner). “Do you know what happens if you laugh while crying? Hair grows out of your butthole.” It was a constant truism Youngmi Mayer’s mother would say threateningly after she would make her daughter laugh while crying. Her mother used it to cheer her up in moments when she could tell Youngmi was overtaken with grief. The humorous saying would never fail to lighten the mood, causing both daughter and mother to laugh and cry at the same time. Her mother had learned this trick from her mother, and her mother had learned this from her mother before her: it had also helped an endless string of her family laugh through suffering. In I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying, Youngmi jokes through the retelling of her childhood as an offbeat biracial kid in Saipan, a place next to a place that Americans might know. She jokes through her difficult adolescence where she must parent her own parents: a mother who married her husband because he looked like white Jesus (and the singer of The Bee Gees). And with humor and irreverence and full-throated openness, she jokes even while sharing the story of what her family went through during the last century of colonialism and war in Korea, while reflecting how years later, their wounds affect her in New York City as a single mom, all the while interrogating whiteness, gender, and sexuality. Youngmi jokes through these stories in hopes of passing onto the reader what her family passed down to her: The gift of laughing while crying. The gift of a hairy butthole. Because throughout it all, the one thing she learned was one cannot exist without the other. And like a yin and yang, this duality is reflected in this whip-smart, heart-wrenching, and disarmingly funny memoir told by a bright new voice with so much heart and wisdom. Launch of Paige Reynolds' "Modernism in Irish Women's Contemporary Writing" | 1 Washington Mews

Modernism in Irish Women's Contemporary Writing: The Stubborn Mode (Oxford UP, 2024) examines the tangled relationship between contemporary Irish women writers and literary modernism. In the early decades of the twenty-first century, Irish women's fiction has drawn widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, with a surprising number of these works being commended for their innovative redeployment of literary tactics drawn from early twentieth-century literary modernism. But this strategy is not a new one. Across more than a century, writers from Kate O'Brien to Sally Rooney have manipulated and remade modernism to draw attention to the vexed nature of female privacy, exploring what unfolds when the amorphous nature of private consciousness bumps up against external ordering structures in the public world. Living amid the tenaciously conservative imperatives of church and state in Ireland, their female characters are seen to embrace, reject, and rework the ritual of prayer, the fixity of material objects, the networks of the digital world, and the ordered narrative of the book. The writers studied here, among them Elizabeth Bowen, Edna O'Brien, Anne Enright, Anna Burns, Claire-Louise Bennett, and Eimear McBride, employ the modernist mode in part to urge readers to recognize that female interiority, the prompt for many of the movement's illustrious formal experiments, continues to provide a crucial but often overlooked mechanism to imagine ways around and through seemingly intransigent social problems, such as class inequity, political violence, and sexual abuse. Paige Reynolds, Professor of English at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, publishes on the subjects of modernism, drama and performance, and modern and contemporary Irish literature. She is author of Modernism in Irish Women’s Contemporary Writing: The Stubborn Mode (Oxford UP, 2024) and Modernism, Drama, and the Audience for Irish Spectacle (Cambridge UP, 2007). She also has edited the collections Modernist Afterlives in Irish Literature and Culture (Anthem Press, 2016), The New Irish Studies (Cambridge UP, 2020), and (with Eric Falci) Irish Literature in Transition, Volume 6, 1980-2020 (Cambridge UP, 2020). Paige will be in conversation with Emily C. Bloom, Public Humanities Fellow at Sarah Lawrence College. Her debut memoir, I Cannot Control Everything Forever: A Memoir of Motherhood, Science, and Art was published with St. Martin’s Press in 2024. Her first book, The Wireless Past: Anglo-Irish Writers and the BBC, 1931-1968 (Oxford, 2016) examines the role of public broadcasting in shaping twentieth-century literature. Her articles have appeared in Public Books, Eire-Ireland, The Irish Times, and elsewhere. Information Source: Glucksman Ireland House NYU | eventbrite

We are excited to welcome renowned contemporary artist Simone Douglas who will take you on a compelling visual journey sharing her innovative environmental land work ‘Ice Boat,’ the driving force of a multi-year project. A paradoxical pairing of ice and desert, the Ice Boat tilts towards the heat of the sun, melting as it follows its arc across the sky and reforming into a ”sea” of water while regenerating the land. Ice Boat is situated on the ancient bed of a pre-historic ocean and was formed using sustainable energy delivered by the sun. Central to Douglas’s work is advocacy and advancement for the role of art as a key part of shaping and understanding the collective future. Her work has been exhibited internationally and can be found in collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the National Gallery of Victoria, in addition to being featured in international contemporary anthologies and in major publications including ArtForum, Blind Spot, and Art + Australia. Entry to this event is not guaranteed with Eventbrite reservation. Please arrive no more than 15-20 minutes before the event start time. Seating is first-come, first-served. “Are you a creative person who is seeking to infuse your work with magic, divination, and ritual? Would you like to learn more about Shaker gift drawings and their connection to the rich legacy of channeled artworks? Are you curious about women mystics who changed the course of art history? Have you ever wondered what lies on the other side of the conscious veil when you get into a flow state?” –Hilma’s Ghost, a feminist artist collective, consisting of internationally recognized artists Dannielle Tegeder and Sharmistha Ray. Join Hilma’s Ghost for a magic circle inside the American Folk Art Museum, site of the current exhibition Anything But Simple: Spirit Drawings and the Shaker Vision. Participants will do drawing and divination exercises using automatism, tarot, and other magic techniques that take us across the threshold of the seen to the unseen realm. Drawing inspiration from the Shaker works and techniques on view as well as Spiritualists, Dadaists and Surrealists, we will learn about the rich artistic tradition of feminism and spirituality including our namesake, Hilma af Klint, as well as many artists like Emma Kunz, Leonara Carrington, Ithell Colquhoun, and Ana Mendieta. The workshop will end with an ancestral closing. The Dialogue + Studio Workshop series offers participants opportunities to gain insight into and engage with self-taught art, past and present, at a deep level. Focused discussions about select themes, techniques, and materials featured in current exhibitions are paired with related expert-led hands-on workshops. About the Artists Hilma's Ghost is a feminist artist collective co-founded by artists and educators Dannielle Tegeder and Sharmistha Ray that fuses contemporary art with modern spirituality through forms of divination and ritual. Named after the Swedish artist and mystic, Hilma af Klint, the collective's work is a critique of gendered power structures, providing a critical and revolutionary platform for rethinking gender in the arts while recovering feminist histories as its ballast for critique. The collective acts as a collaborative model for feminist research, artistic production, enchanted pedagogies, and community. Their work ranges from the traditional to the esoteric, including paintings and drawings, surrealist games, a tarot deck, ritual object-based installations, pedagogical workshops, curated exhibitions, community projects, and books. In the 4+years of their collective’s existence, they have completed more than 20 collaborative projects and participated in 50 public programs both nationally and internationally. In 2022, the duo began an itinerant art school with generative workshops fusing art and magic that have been attended by over 1K people. Their limited edition tarot deck, Abstract Futures Tarot, has a popular following in the art world. Hilma’s Ghost has been featured in solo and group exhibitions and projects internationally at Marlborough Gallery, New York, NY; The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT; Galería RGR, Mexico City, Mexico; Hill-Stead Museum, Farmington, CT; Secrist | Beach, Chicago, IL; The Parallax Center, Portland, OR; The Armory Show, New York, NY; among many others. Exploring the Audubon Mural Project: NYC Street Art for Endangered Birds | The Chipped Cup (Outside)

New York

Painting
If you walk around the Northern Manhattan neighborhood of Hamilton Heights, you're bound to stumble upon beautiful artworks on seemingly every corner. But unlike other art collectives around New York City featuring an eclectic range of themes, this one focuses exclusively on birds — and not just any birds, but those North American species that could become extinct if nothing is done to address climate change. From stunning designs on storefront security gates to oversized murals covering an entire side of a building, it's time to explore one of the country's most ambitious and environmentally-focused street art initiatives, captivating birders and non-birders alike. Join New York Adventure Club for an on-the-ground exploration of the Audubon Mural Project, a collaboration between the National Audubon Society and art dealer/collector Avi Gitler that aims to create murals of 314 climate-threatened North American birds — mostly throughout the neighborhood of Hamilton Heights, where famed American ornithologist John James Audubon once lived. Led by licensed New York City tour guide Leigh Hallingby, our tour of this incredible collective will include: A brief introduction to the New York neighborhood of Hamilton Heights and impact of former resident / landowner John James Audubon (1785-1851)The origin story the Audubon Mural Project, which to-date, includes nearly 100 murals depicting over 138 bird speciesA close look at dozens of murals throughout the neighborhood of Hamilton Heights, along with commentary around the artists and their visionSee you there! *Please bring a water bottle and comfortable pair of shoes as we’ll be doing a lot of walking! **Our experience will conclude at Broadway and W. 164th St. About Leigh Leigh is a licensed NYC tour guide who specializes in Harlem, Morningside Heights, and the Upper West Side. She is passionate about exploring all five boroughs and beyond on foot, mostly through organized walking tours. Leigh is retired from a 36-year career as a non-profit librarian in New York City. She loves doing research about the neighborhoods in which she gives tours and sharing the information about them with attendees. Leigh is a feminist, collector, genealogist, and lover of arts, culture, and travel. She lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Testimonials The event guide Leigh Hallingby was super — very knowledgeable as well as a lively conversationalist. Her tour was both interesting and fun. Although it’s a longer tour than most, it never dragged — a testament to how engaged she kept us all. Highly recommended! -Deb Enjoyable and interesting. -Shalom The tour guide Leigh was outgoing, informative, safe, and fun. I loved the detailed sheet provided that outlined the birds, artists, and more; I’ve kept it for keepsakes. The overview before we started also was nice. I appreciated the number of pieces we saw, making the event well worth my time rather than being a rush-through. Leigh answered all questions, was engaging, and made the event even better than I could’ve imagined. I learned a lot and had an unforgettable and joyous Sunday walking from each bird art piece to the next. The attention to detail and extra info on the artists and pieces made it all worthwhile. Thank you, too, for still hosting the event despite the only attendees being my friend and me. It meant a lot that Leigh still showed up for us two, and we got such a personal tour on a beautiful Sunday. I cannot recommend this walking tour enough, it’s a special one. -Megan Disclaimer Event takes place rain or shine. By attending a New York Adventure Club experience, you accept our terms of service. Jennifer Bartlett on Larry Eigner, in conversation with Thad Ziolkowski Tuesday, November 19, 6:30 pm the Skylight Room, the Graduate Center 365 5th Ave., New York, NY 10016 The poet Larry Eigner (1927–1996) was a key figure in New American poetry, which grew out of the Black Mountain School and San Francisco Renaissance, and a major influence on the Language poets. Eigner also had cerebral palsy as the result of an accident at birth. It is fortuitous that the poet lived his life in two locations vibrant in both poetics and disability activism. Except for brief periods attending camp and school, he lived with his parents in Swampscott, Massachusetts, until the age of 51. Later, he moved to Berkeley, California, at the height of the disability rights movement. In the 1950s, Eigner attended Camp Jened, which later became famous in the film Crip Camp. Bartlett’s biography covers every significant phase of Eigner’s life: his childhood and young adulthood when he began typing poems with one finger on the manual typewriter that was a bar mitzvah gift; his first publications and the maturation of his poetic interests through correspondence with poets of the era; and after his move to Berkeley, the ever-expanding circle of friends, poets, caretakers, and collaborators he established there. The result is a deeply insightful account of an utterly distinctive voice whose influence widens and deepens with each new generation that encounters him. Jennifer Bartlett is the author of four books of poetry and Sustaining Air: The Life of Larry Eigner. She is co-founder of Zoeglossia, an organization for poets with disabilities. She is the author of four books of poetry and co-editor of Beauty is a Verb: The New Poetry of Disability. Thad Ziolkowski is the author of Our Son the Arson (What Books, 1996), a collection of poems, the memoir On a Wave (Grove/Atlantic, 2002), which was a finalist for the PEN/Martha Albrand Award in 2003, and Wichita (Europa, 2012), a novel. His most recent book, The Drop: How the Most Addictive Sport Can Help Us Understand Addiction and Recovery, was published by HarperCollins in 2021. His essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Times, Slate, Bookforum, Artforum, 4Columns, Galerie and Interview Magazine. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has a PhD in English Literature from Yale University. Information Source: The Leon Levy Center for Biography | eventbrite

Princess Grace Irish Library Lecture: Margarita Cappock | 1 Washington Mews

Please join us for the second lecture in our partnership with the Princess Grace Irish Library in Monaco, featuring Margarita Cappock. This illustrated lecture will explore the early life in Ireland of the celebrated artist Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and the complex relationship the artist had with Ireland, the land of his birth. It will also outline the significance of Bacon’s relationships with Irish writers, artists and photographers during his lifetime. Bacon was born at 63 Lower Baggot Street in Dublin. He was the second of five children born to English parents who had settled in Ireland at the beginning of the twentieth century. Bacon spent his early life in County Kildare and County Laois, with shorter stays in England during the First World War. The Irish War of Independence (1919-1921) and Civil War (1922-23) cast a shadow of violence over the countryside, particularly for the Protestant gentry such as the Bacons. Contrary to the common belief that Francis Bacon fled Ireland at 16 years of age, never to return, in 1929 he travelled to the west of Ireland with his companion and first patron, Eric Allden. This little-known trip reveals how influential Ireland was for Bacon and how the origins of Bacon’s artistic life can be found in Ireland. His earliest surviving painting can be traced to the depths of Connemara in the west of Ireland. Dr. Margarita Cappockis an art historian, curator and writer. A graduate of University College, Dublin she was formerly Head of Collections at the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin which she joined in 1999 as Project Manager of the Francis Bacon Studio and Archive. There she led the team and coordinated the documentation and reconstruction of Bacon's Reece Mews studio and its contents. She is the author of the book Francis Bacon's Studio (Merrell Publishers, London and New York, 2005), which is the definitive text on the posthumous contents of Bacon’s studio and has written extensively on Francis Bacon and Irish, British and American Artists for The Burlington Magazine, the Irish Arts Review and other international academic journals and exhibition catalogues. She has lectured worldwide on Francis Bacon’s studio and acted as curatorial advisor for international exhibitions on Francis Bacon. She has contributed to several documentaries and most recently was concept originator and co-presenter with Adam Clayton of U2 on the documentary, Francis Bacon: The Outsider which aired on Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ. She was Chair of ICOM Ireland from 2020 to 2023. In 2023, she was the Ireland Funds Academic in Residence at the Princess Grace Irish Library in Monaco. Margarita writes extensively on Irish art and artists, both historic and contemporary. She has a particular interest in women artists and was the main author and editor of the publication on Sarah Cecilia Harrison (1863-1941), Artist, Social Campaigner and City Councillor (Four Courts Press, 2022). She has recently been working on the development of a project to establish a proposed Harry Clarke Museum of Irish Stained Glass in Dublin.
