Atlanta
Join the AUC Art History + Curatorial Studies Collective faculty and staff for a hands-on art restoration project. The Atlanta Beltline spans roughly twelve miles of the 22-mile corridor on the west, south, and east sides of Atlanta, and Art on the Atlanta BeltLine strives to make art accessible to all. Beginning in 2010 as a way to encourage people to explore the Atlanta BeltLine (a former railroad corridor), improve neighborhood connectivity and access to cultural amenities; Art on the Beltline hosts free exhibitions and programming, making art accessible to numerous communities around the BeltLine. Participation in the exhibition also showcases the work of established and emerging artists from Atlanta and beyond. The Beltline is home to numerous permanent and rotating sculptures, which remain outdoors year-round. Considering their outdoor location, these murals and sculptures are interacted with by thousands in addition to withstanding a variety of weather conditions. During this community service project, students will work with an Art Conservator to learn conservation techniques and apply them to some of Atlanta’s most treasured works of public art. During this event, the group will learn how to apply conservation techniques to a work of public art and walk the Westside trail to view other works, some in need of conservation. The event will open with coffee & refreshments, and include an overview of the Art on the Atlanta Beltline program, plus an introduction to the field of public art and conservation. The conservator will overview and demonstrate the restoration techniques in advance of the project. All participants will be asked to sign a participation waiver. Look at Your Eyes: Solo Exhibition by Jordan Young | Public Art Futures Lab
Nov 17, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Atlanta
I’m so small, I can barely be seen
How can this great love be inside of me?
Look at your eyes; they’re small in size
But they see enormous things
Rumi’s poetic adage would ruminate for centuries ahead of Alan Watts conceding that “trying to define yourself is like trying to bite your own teeth.” At the core of consciousness is a reflexive loop- an inward-turning mirror that allows for the architecture of “I.” The logical world reveres this turn as the Eden of the mind, while others decry it as delusion or further, question the existence of any mirror at all. If you hold your own eye contact in the mirror and unfocus your eyes, you may permit yourself the sensation of encountering a stranger. Is knowing yourself even possible? Is the strange loop at our center a gateway or simply a trick of the light?
Look at Your Eyes is a solo exhibition by media artist, Jordan Young (2024 A&E Atlanta Artist in Residence at the Public Art Futures Lab) framing reflexive and recursive loops that question self through experiments in perception. Void has been making eyes at you the whole time. Do you dare gaze back? Extended Exhibition Opening Dates Sunday, November 17th, 1:00pm-4pm at the Public Art Futures LabThe Public Art Futures Lab is located in Underground Atlanta, 88 Lower Alabama Street, Atlanta, GA 30303. We're a minute walk from the MARTA Five-Points Station! *Please check current MARTA schedules for up-to-date ride information Follow Jordan & Fulton Public Art on Instagram for more info on this event About the Public Art Futures Lab: The Futures Lab is a space to exhibit, experiment, educate and experience the role of technology as it relates to public art. By reducing barriers to creating and participating in this emerging space, the Lab seeks to expand access to cultural enrichment, provide the tools for local artists to thrive and maintain Fulton County's status as a creative cultural capital. The Futures Lab is made possible through the support of our host Underground Atlanta, and our residency partners A&E Atlanta and MARTA Artbound.

The Creative Process | Graduate Student Panel | Clark Atlanta University Art Museum
Nov 20, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Atlanta
In March of 1924, Charles Sturgeon Johnson held a meeting of minds in Harlem, NY that sparked what we now know as the Harlem Renaissance. Five months later, James Baldwin, acclaimed writer and Civil Rights activist was born in Harlem Hospital. His proximity to the emergence of distinct African American art forms in the 20th century fueled his critical perspectives of classic and emerging art, creative approach to detailing life in and outside of America, and resistance to white hegemony and discrimination against African Americans. 100 years after his birth, artists and scholars evoke Baldwin’s legacy as a muse for their creative process and critical approach. Free as they want to be: Artists Committed to Memory uses a Baldwin quote from the 1960 Esquire Symposium on writers and writing in America today as a theoretical grounding of their visual interrogation of the afterlives of slavery. In the exhibition, Dr. Deborah Willis and Dr. Cheryl Finley curate an exhibit that illustrates, interrogates, protests and subverts the past. Baldwin often shared his critique of classic, contemporary and emerging art, particularly in regard to the representation of Black people and culture. In his essay, “The Creative Process,” Baldwin positions the artist as an outsider of society responsible for challenging dominant hegemony and motivating new perspectives. His profound influence on other scholars and writers both in his time and afterward, and his role in the larger context of the development of what has come to be known as African American literature, all suggest that it might be fitting to use the occasion of the one-hundredth anniversary of his birth to examine his work and legacy. The panel hopes, in this anniversary year, to encourage a diverse conversation about Baldwin, his work and his role in influencing Dr. Willis and Dr. Finley to ground their exhibition in his words and the implications of the aforementioned in contemporary literature and popular culture. “If Black Art Isn't Art, Then Tell Me, What Is?” Chris Colvin, 5th Year Humanities Doctoral Candidate, CAU If the words “English” and “language” were replaced with “art” in James Balwin’s essay, “If Black English Isn’t a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is?” nothing would be any different contextually. Black art reveals our place in the world and evolves with us. It is immortal and universal. It is an identification marker and a byproduct of middle passage epistemology. That is because Black art, like Black language, is a remix. And much of the art in the Free As they want to be exhibit exemplifies this perfectly. Chris will apply his theory of remixing to five pieces of art from the Free As They Want to Be exhibition. With this application, he will attempt to highlight how these artists are practicing Sankofic, symbiotic, and speculative remixing through their reinterpretations and reexaminations of famous Black figures and moments in history. In doing so, he will connect their work to James Baldwin’s essay to showcase how Black art is not only interdiscursive but also inherently dependent on remixing. “Monuments: The Role of Collective Memory in Baldwin Aesthetics” Candice Thornton, 4th Year Humanities Doctoral Student, CAU Candice will be examining how Baldwin uses memory as a narrative element of Black aesthetics. They will be discussing pieces from Free As They Want to Be, like Sheila Pree Bright's the Invisible Empire, that reflect Baldwin aesthetics. Further, they will be engaging in discourse surrounding the intersection of collective memory, public history and identity development through a Black Southern lens. Finding Zamani: Examining Uses of the Archive in Speculative Parafiction” Shyheim Williams, 5th year Humanities Doctoral Candidate, CAU Shyheim will discuss the uses of archival material in the creation of multidisciplinary art as a response to Baldwin’s Everybody’s Protest Novel. His talk will illuminate the importance of Wake Work and the use of archival material in Black art forms as a way to challenge dominant hegemony, expand perspectives of history to include marginalized peoples (Black femmes and queer folx), and how speculative artists can use archival material to create Speculative Paraficiton that challenge and expands the American myth. His theory is grounded in the Bantu concept of Sasa, the conceivable past and near future, and Zamani, time that looks back to the past for meaning and understanding in the present, and Sadiya Hartman’s concept of Critical Fabulation. His research will center on the work of Sadie Barnette, Adama Delphine Fawndu, Carrie Mae Weems and Dr. Finley’s portrait book in Free As They Want to Be, and La Vaughn Belle’s Sovereign.

Deliberately Defaced: Anti-Blackness and Museum Institutions, Lecture | Spelman College - Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby, Ed.D. Academic Center, Auditorium & Lobby
Nov 20, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Atlanta
The first Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Distinguished Lecture of the academic year, Dr. Mia Bagneris will present, Deliberately Defaced: Anti-Blackness and Museum Institutions. Exposing the shocking story of a duplicitous restorer, the knowing misrepresentation of an important object, the widespread circulation of a damaging and entirely fabricated narrative, and more than three decades of institutional cover-up, this talk analyzes the series of visual culture crimes to which Franz Fleischbein’s 1837 Portrait of a Free Woman of Color has been subject and considers similar examples like that of the Met’s recently acquired work, Bélizaire and the Frey Children (also 1837), in order to unveil the anti-Blackness ultimately at the foundation of conventional art historical inquiry and museum practice. ABOUT MIA L. BAGNERIS Education Ph.D. Harvard University, African American Studies (Primary Field: History of Art and Visual Culture) Biography Mia L. Bagneris teaches African diaspora art history and studies of race in Western Art. Concentrating primarily on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British and American art and visual culture, much of her scholarship explores the representation of race in the Anglo-American world and the place of images in the histories of slavery, colonialism, empire, and the construction of national identities. Attendant to these concerns, she has focused particularly on depictions of mixed-race or ambiguously raced bodies that trouble, transgress, and potentially disrupt constructed racial orders by exposing their artificial and often arbitrary foundations. Her 2018 monograph, Colouring the Caribbean: Race and the art of Agostino Brunias, offers the first comprehensive study of the artist’s pictures which were made for British plantocrats and colonial elites and feature Caribbeans of color—so called ‘Red’ and ‘Black’ Carib Indians, dark-skinned Africans and Afro-Creoles, and people of mixed race. The book explores the role of Brunias’s paintings in reifying inchoate notions of race and how they both reflect and refract ideas about race commonly held by eighteenth-century Britons. Dr. Bagneris’s current book project, Imagining the Oriental South: The Enslaved Mixed-Race Beauty in British Art and Culture, c. 1865-1900, works to understand Britons’ pronounced and continued fascination with the enslaved, mixed-race beauty in art and literature even and especially after the abolition of slavery in the United States made the potential political suasion of such works obsolete. As part of this investigation, the project explores marked visual and rhetorical echoes between representations of the so-called “tragic mulatto/quadroon/octoroon” and concurrent expressions of Orientalism in Western visual culture. Against the upright and respectable image of Victorian England, the South—and especially Catholic Louisiana—could be imagined as a place of luxury, debauchery, and desire, a perfect echo to the Orient within the British popular imagination and one made stronger by the association of both regions with the traffic in pretty women as sex slaves. With co-author Dr. Anna Arabindan-Kesson, Dr. Bagneris also has a forthcoming volume, Reframing “Black Art”: Case Studies in Nineteenth-Century Visual Culture, which will be published by Routledge in fall 2023. The project was generously supported by an ACLS Collaborative Research Fellowship. Dr. Bagneris’s research has also been supported by grants and fellowships from a number of other institutions including the Yale Center for British Art, Harvard University’s W.E.B. DuBois Institute (now the Hutchins Center), the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South, the Terra Foundation, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
