Jarman's rich artistic practice encompassed painting, film, installation, writing, set design and performance. His most enduring legacy may be his gardens and former home of Prospect Cottage in Dungeness - a sanctuary and retreat that fuelled his creativity and has become a site of pilgrimage for visitors from around the world. Jarman is perhaps best known today as a pioneer of experimental film, but his fusion of art and activism was particularly important in the development of many queer artistic practices. This exhibition brings together rarely seen drawings and films by Jarman, as well as photography and archival material about the artist. Derek Jarman: Delphinium Day marks the 30th anniversary of the artist's death from AIDS-related illness at the age of 52. It is the first time his work has been shown in New Zealand. The City of Wellington and Dawes Art Museum will host an expanded public programme, including screenings of films in partnership with Wellington Film Society. The public programme is supported by the British Council New Zealand and the British Council Pacific.
