Book launch of 'The Shores of Vaikus' (2024) by Philip GrossPhilip Gross in conversation with an Estonian writer Kai AareleidBook signingPlease note that ENTRANCE to the event is ONLY allowed upon presentation of photo ID and a confirmed FREE e-ticket. *** In the course of forty years an increasingly subtle conversation has evolved between words and silence at the core of Philip Gross's poetry. This is never more so than in the poems of this edgy homage to Estonia, the country of his refugee father’s birth. At this collection’s heart, the shapeshifting prose-poem monologues of Evi And The Devil weave a haunted landscape out of folktale, dark humour, the routine atrocities of history and a vividly present sense of place. The Shores of Vaikus (Bloodaxe Books, 2024) is Philip Gross’s 28th book of poetry, and his 13th from Bloodaxe, following The Thirteenth Angel (2022), which was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize. *** Kai Aareleid is an Estonian author and translator sharing her life between Tallinn, Helsinki, London and travelling the world (and books). She has translated works by Bruce Chatwin, Javier Marías, Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Enrique Vila-Matas, Roberto Bolaño, Isabel Allende and Jorge Luis Borges among others. Her own novels are about memory and roots, family bonds, secrets and silences. She is known for her sparse and aquarellic style; short, miniature-like chapters, and her special relationship to photography, food and cityspaces, both past and present. She has won numerous literary prizes and her works have been translated into several languages. Information Source: Estonian Embassy in London | eventbrite

Michael Shafar | Inappropriate | Good Chat Comedy Club

You may know Michael Shafar from his appearances on TV and radio. In which case, you're probably very old because traditional media is dead and, soon, you will be too. It's more likely that you know him from the Internet, where he has over 100,000 followers and has racked up 100+ million views. He's also gotten three death threats, so you know he's funny. Michael will be expressing opinions on colonialism, assassinations, homophobia, Israel, paedophiles, terrorism and Pauline Hanson. He will also advocate for Indigenous Australians to commit acts of terror. Many of these topics would be considered inappropriate to raise at a family dinner or on a first date. But, in the context of a comedy show, they're actually quite funny. Shafar circumnavigates the line between edgy and offensive with beautiful finesse. ★★★★½ The Age He’s a brand of comedian that is getting rarer and rarer to come by these days, and if you’re among those who fear comedy has gotten too politically correct, this show will put those fears to rest. ★★★★ TimeOut Information Source: Good Chat Comedy Club | eventbrite

A virtuosic, risk-embracing one-off - John Fordham, The GuardianAn artist with little need for introductions, Elliot Galvin is a long-time trailblazer in the UK jazz firmament with four solo albums that have seen him top album of the year lists at the likes of Downbeat and Jazzwise, as well as being a member of the Mercury nominated Dinosaur, and collaborating with Shabaka Hutchings, Emma-Jean Thackray, Norma Winstone, Marius Neset and Mark Lockheart. Scheduled for release in February 2025 via independent London tastemaker label Gearbox Records (Binker & Moses, Abdullah Ibrahim, Cahill//Costello), “The Ruin” marks a new start for Galvin. This is his most personal album to date, written on his childhood piano and inspired by the bleak yet beautiful landscapes of his hometown, the music free-flows between serpentine piano and modular synth lines weaving and colliding around ephemeral vocalisations, deceivingly groove-heavy percussion, and intricate, soulful flute improvisations, featuring a who’s who of estimable guest musicians and friends from the UK scene including a secret special guest on flutes, renowned bassist and vocalist Ruth Goller, Polar Bear drummer and Patti Smith / Damon Albarn collaborator Sebastian Rochford, and longtime collaborators The Ligeti Quartet. Following Chris’ successful debut on the comedy circuit she toured her highly acclaimed second 1 hour stand up show Can’t Complain in 2022, sold out to multiple crowds with Busyin 2023 and most recently in 2024 completed a national tour of her fourth one hour stand up show Good-O to rave reviews. Chris’s stand up is based on her life and the people in it, making it real and relatable, delivered in her signature understated, laconic style. If you’re looking for a song and dance, you’re not getting it. “She seems to be one of those rare comedians that are so good at what they do, and so comfortable doing it, that they make comedy seem easy. She commanded the attention of the room effortlessly; she evoked waves of laughter without so much as a sweat… Ryan has all the wisdom that comes with life experience with little of the (boring!) maturity, and it’s fantastic.” - BMA Magazine May 2019. Louisa is a comedian, writer and improviser based in Brisbane who has written and performed in the Anywhere Festival, Brisbane Fringe Festival and Brisbane Comedy Festival. She spent two months in the United States in 2023, training at iO Theatre and Second City as well as performing stand-up comedy in Chicago and New York.
