Theatre is Dead - Long Live Theatre! | The House (Main Stage)

Nov 27, 2024 (UTC+0)
Plymouth

Theater
Can the ancient Spirits of Comedy & Tragedy kick theatre's dead corpse back to life? Thorax and Andromedus, the Spirits of Comic and of Tragic theatre, look down in horror on the earth, where theatre is dead. Above them loom the gods – Old Night and Desire Itself, who will destroy them for having let theatre die. Across a gulf are the Screen Spirits, who are having a golden age. Our heroes scramble about in mounting panic, till finally deciding to incarnate on earth as humans. But down in the world, things don’t go according to plan…. Columbina Theatre Company combines the verse drama skills of Peter Oswald (Globe Theatre, NT, West End, Broadway,) with the Commedia brilliance of Howard Gayton (Ophaboom,) to offer highly wrought and richly comic language in combination with intensely physicalised fooling and clowning, in a play which lays bare the spiritual crisis of contemporary theatre, and asks, what will we do without it? Creative Talk: Laura Kazaroff | The House (Main Stage)

Plymouth
Arts
Fine Art
This event is part of our Creative Talks series that feature practitioners/makers/artists who work in a variety of disciplines, media and forms across the creative arts, including: the visual arts, design, performance, craft-work, creative writing and more. The series aims to address questions about the nature of ‘creativity’ and ‘practice as research’, featuring speakers who will share their work, the processes they use, their influences, and their own experiences of professional practice. Sessions will reflect the disciplinary range of speakers and may feature presentations, performances, workshops etc. The aim is to create an open, multi-disciplinary space in which to introduce audiences (students and the public alike) to a wide range of creative practices that inspire new ideas about how to make new work. For this Creative Talk we welcome Laura Kazaroff, artist, whose work is currently featuring in the New Contemporaries Exhibition in The Levinsky Gallery Saturday 28 September – Saturday 7 December 2024. This event will be a presentation as an insight into Laura's research, practice and processes. She will talk through the early stages of her works' development, and what inspires and motivates her practice. One of the main themes that her practice explores is 'the wellness industry’, particularly through the eyes of ‘pop-culture’, and its direct effects on the way we perceive our own mental health. Laura will be discussing this as well as the important role that repurposing objects plays in her practice and how this is significant to the themes she researches. Laura Kazaroff (b.1993) is a London based artist from Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2023 she graduated from the MFA Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, previously having completed a BA Fashion Design at the School of Architecture, Design and Urbanism (FADU) at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her practice is concerned with the ways in which happiness, especially in relation to mental health, becomes inevitably commodified. Through sculpture and installation, she explores the various ways in which this commodification permeates contemporary culture and makes its way into daily social interactions. Often, this is manifested in the overusing of certain terms and phrases until they completely lose their meaning. In this context, repurposing found objects serves as a dual metaphor. These once- functional items have now been transformed into gimmicky, non-functional devices that playfully deceive and ultimately 'disappoint’ in their lack of function. Their sleek metallic surfaces, smooth curves, and vibrant screens invite closer interaction, only to reveal that the buttons don't work, and the handles are merely plungers. Recent group shows include: ABG emerging: Collection 01 at Alice Black (2024), In between/ness: Women tales from Latin America at Somers Gallery (2024), Asphodel Meadows at Staffordshire St by Studio Chapple (2023) and Hall of mirrors for PLOP by Georgia Stephenson (2023). Rupturing Architecture: Book Launch | Jill Craigie Cinema, Roland Levinsky Building

Literary Arts
Join us for the launch of Dr Sana Murrani’s latest book, Rupturing Architecture, which critically and visually explores the spatial practices of refuge in response to conditions of war, violence, and displacement in Iraq from 2003 to 2023. Don't miss this insightful discussion on architecture, conflict, trauma, home and displacement. Written by an Iraqi architect who has lived through the trauma of several wars, 10 years of UN-imposed sanctions, an invasion, and the subsequent violence, the book Rupturing Architecture. Spatial Practices of Refuge in Response to War and Violence in Iraq, 2003–2023 (Bloomsbury, 2024) captures a broad spectrum of spatial responses to trauma and presents a fresh perspective on how ordinary Iraqis create refuge across the spaces of the home, the urban environment, and border geographies. In the face of spatial wounding and the many injustices suffered by the Iraqi people, there has also been a wealth of refuge-making practices that showcase their creative and imaginative design and adaptability to change and trauma over time. Rupturing Architecture employs methods such as creative deep mapping, memory work, storytelling, interviews, and case studies of architectural responses to the geographies of war and violence. At the core of the book are the lived and felt experiences of fifteen Iraqis from across Iraq, whose resilience underscores a broader narrative of spatial justice and feminist spatial practices. The book articulates the dual nature of rupturing as both a sign of trauma and a powerful act of resistance, examining how these forces shape domesticity, urbanity, and border spaces. The concluding manifesto for spatial justice calls for a deep, integrated understanding of place, memory, and trauma, advocating for comprehensive strategies in the making of refuge spaces that also resonate in a wider, global context. Speakers’ bios: Dr Sana Murrani is an Associate Professor in Spatial Practice with a background in Architecture and Urban Design. She is the Arts/Health Research Lead, founder of the Displacement Studies Research Network, and co-founder of the Justice and Imagination in Global Displacement Research Collective at the University of Plymouth. She is also a Visiting Senior Fellow at the LSE Middle East Centre. Sana’s research interests are rooted in the (un)disciplined interdisciplinarity of spatial justice, informed by a creative, place-based research practice that maps built, destroyed, remembered, and reimagined trauma geographies of war, violence, and displacement. Author of Rupturing architecture: spatial practices of refuge in response to war and violence in Iraq – a monograph published with Bloomsbury (2024) which was associated with an online archive: Ruptured Domesticity that was exhibited at the LSE Middle East Centre in 2023. Her creative fieldwork and practice have been funded by the European Cultural Foundation, the British Institute for the Study of Iraq (British Academy), the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the AHRC through the Impact Accelerator Account (IAA) at the University of Plymouth. She is the Principal Investigator for an AHRC IAA Fellowship project alongside multidisciplinary artist Kimbal Bumstead and a team of Yazidi researchers, titled: Ruptured Atlas: Creative Mapping of Yazidi Odyssey of Home, Displacement, Migration and Return. The project is in partnership with Sinjar Academy, Yazda, IOM Iraq and the LSE Middle East Centre. Here is the link to the project’s story maps. Shabnam Holliday is Associate Professor in International Relations and School of Society and Culture Internationalisation Lead. She is also the Research Director at the British Institute of Persian Studies, British Academy. Her research focuses on Iran's relationship with the international and decentring the discipline of International Relations through the case of Iran. I've come away learning a few new processes and a good insight to the stand-up industry. - Raj Kukadia, London “The comedy course with Nik was absolutely fantastic. In just 2 days I went from an quivering anxious on-stage mess to a confident new stand-up at the final showcase. Some people even laughed! Nik’s course has given me the confidence to continue and perform at more shows. I would thoroughly recommend Nik’s courses to anyone thinking about getting into stand-up comedy” - Lucy Amans, Costa Del Sol, Spain “Amazing course. Had a lot of fun. I learnt some great tips about comedy that will help me far into the future. Nik’s energy is as electric as Jamie Foxx in Spider-Man. You’d be a fool to not grab the opportunity to do this course. You’ll meet some awesome people, I mean what else can you ask for?” - Liam Wilcox, Brighton Nik’s course was a really fun 2 days. I laughed from start to finish and met some great like minded people. I learnt so much about the comedy industry, gigs and the circuit. The best thing was how generous Nik is with his input, experience and time. His advice and tutoring has taken me from an unsure total novice to confident amateur wanting more stage time in just one weekend. I have learnt so much about writing, editing, performing and what I can bring. Do yourself a favour; book in this course. - Charlotte Madden, Hove Information Source: Art of Comedy | eventbrite

Part of our 2024-25 Musica Viva season celebrating the works of the iconic composer Béla Bartók. Our 2024-25 Musica Viva season celebrates works of the iconic composer Béla Bartók. He was a leading pioneer of exploring music of the people of his native area (now Hungary, Romania and Slovakia) and forging a unique, often intense compositional voice and style that integrated folk elements – particularly dynamic melodic and rhythmic features – into his vibrant and evocative compositions. As part of our commemoration of Bartók this season – the 80th anniversary of his death in 1945 – each of our Musica Viva concerts features a pivotal work. His Piano Sonata, String Quartet no. 3, String Quartet no. 5, and Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta will all be performed by leading artists. We invite you to join us for this exciting and unique celebration of a master of the 20th century, one whose works withstand all tests of time and highlight the importance of “home” as a defining stylistic concept. Mark Forkgen conducts a unique programme of Purcell/ Britten Chacony, Bach Concerto in D minor and the ground-breaking Bartók Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. This concert features the new Musica Viva Sinfonia comprised of leading London musicians, many of whom have performed previously on Musica Viva concerts. For this Creative Talk we welcome Scott Thurston to share his practice. He will explore his key creative and theoretical influences, discuss major projects and illustrate his ideas with short performances. Scott Thurston's kinepoetic practice (literally movement making) is a mode of integrating poetry and dance in performance, developed over the last twenty years out of, amongst other things, Thurston's engagement with Gabrielle Roth's Five Rhythms movement meditation practice. This work overlaps with his research in creative psychotherapy with the Arts for the Blues project (www.artsfortheblues.com), and recent training as a person-centred counsellor. Scott Thurston first began writing on the London experimental poetry scene in the late 1980s. He joined the University of Salford in 1994, setting up a degree in English and Creative Writing, followed by the Masters in Creative Writing: Innovation and Experiment and a PhD pathway in Creative Writing. Scott co-organised The Other Room – an experimental poetry reading series in Manchester – for ten years and is founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of British and Irish Innovative Poetry. Since 2004, he has been developing a creative practice integrating dance and poetry which he calls kinepoetics. Following this interest into a collaboration with Dance Movement Psychotherapist Vicky Karkou and Counselling Psychologist (and partner of twenty-six years) Joanna Omylinska-Thurston, led to the founding of Arts for the Blues, a new creative group psychotherapy model. Scott's selected poems, Turning, was published by Shearsman in 2023.
