Workshop: YOROKE Weaving by Japanese master weaver Yukiko Yokoyama | Loop of the Loom - DUMBO

Oct 5, 2024 (UTC-5)
Plymouth
Arts
Craft
Yukiko Yokoyama, a world master of Yoroke weaving artists, will be holding a workshop in Brooklyn, New York! Yoroke weaving (also known as Ondulé weaving) uses a special fan reed that creates a beautiful, flowing warp line as you weave, allowing dynamic patterns to emerge. Yokoyama’s technique is filled with secrets for holding its shape, enabling the weaving of long cloth that fully highlights the curved patterns. In this workshop, participants will start threading through the harness with kasuri-dyed threads created by Yokoyama that were already threaded through the fan reed. Then wind them, and learn the weaving technique. This is an intermediate-level class, so participants are required to have warping skills. (For those who may be beginners, please take a class at our studio before the workshop.) The Yoroke fan reeds used in the workshop will be available for purchase from the instructor. Yokoyama will generously teach you the techniques she has developed over 40 years of experience. This is the first class outside Japan—don’t miss this rare opportunity! +++ This workshop will be the same as the one held on September 29th. As it is a small class, it will be held twice. Please choose one of the dates. +++ +++ We recommend also attending a workshop on Kasuri dyeing, which will add to your skills and help you create even more beautiful Yoroke weaving. +++ Information Source: Loop of the Loom | eventbrite

Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas featuring composer Roberto Sierra October 5, 2024 7pm at Onondaga Community College, Syracuse, N.Y.October 6, 2024 4pm at Hochstein Performance Hall, Rochester, N.Y.Rochester, N.Y.--“Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas features performances from chamber ensemble fivebyfive as well as musicians from Society for New Music (SNM), with each group hosting a concert in their respective home city. The program focuses on Latin American themes but also explores the profound connections and mutual understanding that our stories can create between us. fivebyfive is a Rochester, N.Y based chamber ensemble featuring flute, clarinet, electric guitar, bass, and piano. SNM provides opportunities for musicians in Central New York to showcase their talent while performing concerts that feature new compositions. Anchoring the “Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas program is a new NYSCA-funded work by Roberto Sierra of Ithaca, N.Y. With a Support for Artists grant, fivebyfive commissioned the Grammy-nominated and Latin Grammy winner to produce “Sonidos del Tlön”. Sierra uses the magic realism found in a short story by 20th-century Argentinian writer Jorge Borge as inspiration. Exploring fantasy and reality is a common theme in Latin American literature. Many creators use this oppositional device to make sense of a fraught present and uncertain future. “Sierra does an extraordinary job of taking us into a musical twilight zone. Even he says some of his music is absurd— like mimicking the screech of a bird--but he wants to experiment with sound. I think listeners will definitely find this fantastical,” proclaimed Laura Lentz, fivebyfive’s Artistic Director. Sierra will attend both concerts and headline the pre-concert chats that occur 30 minutes prior to the start of each program. Other music presented will include works by Clarice Assad, Miguel del Aguila, Gabriela Lena Frank, inti figgis-vizueta, and Angélica Negrón. Intertwined with the musical pieces will be an original presentation by Rochester poet, Henry I Padrón-Morales. During the intermission of the Rochester concert, professional baker Ingrid Gonzalez will provide Latin American pastries through her business Simply Delicious Treats. Coffee Connection, a social enterprise that sells fair-trade, organic, sustainably farmed coffee, will offer individual servings and bagged coffee from Latin America as well. Additionally, a collaborative experience called, “Create Your Own Fantastical Story”, will take place on Sunday September 29, 2024, at 2pm. Author Marla Brandt conducts an hour-long workshop for all ages at Writers & Books located at 740 University Avenue, Rochester, New York. Members of fivebyfive will be present to offer their stories. “We hope participants will want to share what they write when they attend the concert the weekend after the workshop,” said Laura Lentz, Artistic Director of fivebyfive. “Our goal is to make every concert experience transformative and give our audiences an opportunity for their own artistic expression.” Information Source: fivebyfive | eventbrite

This is a true story of Love, Exile, and Freedom Fighting. The year is 1978. South Africa's apartheid machine is grinding all in its path. Nelson Mandela is in his 17th year on Robben Island. A young activist teacher, the late Prithiraj (Pritz) Ramkisun Dullay, believed that teaching is a subversive activity and lived out his belief in truth and freedom from fear. As a consequence of his fight against oppression, Pritz, his wife Mala, and their daughters Simmi and Sureka had to flee for their lives to Denmark. There, they pursued their contribution to the struggle until Mandela was freed and they could return to South Africa. Using family photo archives and diaspora performance aesthetics, The Decolonial Salon, in this work-in-progress, explores insights into resilience, hope and the transformative power of resistance that can blossom from the trials of exile and the enduring battle for justice. Creative Talk: Ronnie Deelan | The House (Main Stage)

Oct 10, 2024 (UTC+0)
Plymouth
Arts
This event is part of our Creative Talks series that feature practitioners/makers/artists who work in a variety of disciplines, media and forms across the creative arts, including: the visual arts, design, performance, craft-work, creative writing and more. The series aims to address questions about the nature of ‘creativity’ and ‘practice as research’, featuring speakers who will share their work, the processes they use, their influences, and their own experiences of professional practice. Sessions will reflect the disciplinary range of speakers and may feature presentations, performances, workshops etc. The aim is to create an open, multi-disciplinary space in which to introduce audiences (students and the public alike) to a wide range of creative practices that inspire new ideas about how to make new work. For this Creative Talk we welcome Ronnie Deelan for an audiovisual deep dive into his creative brain. With a practice that spans every possible creative direction, this event brings the audience inside his mind for a brief moment. During this event, we see how it’s possible to be so distracted yet still focused. Ronnie’s artistic practice revolves around the exploration of synthesis, with a particular emphasis on crafting imaginative soundscapes. In his animation work, he delves into the relationship between audio and visual elements, experimenting with speculative design and soundscapes. Additionally, his recent drawing projects have focused on the realm of speculative biology, drawing connections between this field and historical scientific explorations. His biggest recent achievement is a sound art sculpture presented in China, consisting of a horn measuring 10 meters in length and 3 meters in height at its tallest point, symbolizing change and connection. Listening through the horn offers a fresh perspective, revealing the beauty of everyday sounds. Additionally, it serves as a communication tool, extending the reach of human voices and enriching the park's sonic landscape. Alongside his artistic pursuits, Ronnie is also the founder of “White Noise” at the Royal College of Art. Starting out as a monthly event, it transformed into an independent nomadic event and record label that provides a platform open to anyone to showcase and experience sound experiments. Ronnie is also a passionate educator with over 9 years of experience in higher education. His interest in education was born from a love for DIY synth electronics, the difficulties faced with self-learning, and the drive to share his knowledge. Join us for an unforgettable night of laughter with Joe Avati's, WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE … Comedy show at Plymouth Memorial Hall, Friday, October 11th. This show is G rated - and suitable for children 10 and over. In Joe Avati's new show he asks you to leave your political correctness at the door as he delivers his hilarious insights on how times have changed, for better or worse, since he grew up as a teenager in the 80’s. Internationally renowned for his inimitable style Avati, who is Australian born with an Italian heritage, is a master of treading the very fine line saying what everyone seems to think but no one dares to say whilst not resorting to the use of profanities or vulgar shock tactic routines in doing so. In his latest offering WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE… he tackles the 'then versus now' generational differences of today's kids, the complexities of modern day parenting compared to the strict upbringing of yesteryear and threaded throughout all of this he tackles the minefield of cancel culture, the woke brigade and why people are over political correctness. His observations are not only deadly accurate but extremely relatable to all ages. This is a show for all the family. Bring your parents to highlight how much they have changed since they were your age, bring your friends to laugh and reminisce about growing up as teenagers when you were that age and most importantly bring your kids so that they know what you went through “when I was your age…” We will see you at the show! For this Creative Talk we welcome Laura Kazaroff, artist, whose work is currently featuring in the New Contemporaries Exhibition in The Levinsky Gallery Saturday 28 September – Saturday 7 December 2024. This event will be a presentation as an insight into Laura's research, practice and processes. She will talk through the early stages of her works' development, and what inspires and motivates her practice. One of the main themes that her practice explores is 'the wellness industry’, particularly through the eyes of ‘pop-culture’, and its direct effects on the way we perceive our own mental health. Laura will be discussing this as well as the important role that repurposing objects plays in her practice and how this is significant to the themes she researches. Laura Kazaroff (b.1993) is a London based artist from Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2023 she graduated from the MFA Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, previously having completed a BA Fashion Design at the School of Architecture, Design and Urbanism (FADU) at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her practice is concerned with the ways in which happiness, especially in relation to mental health, becomes inevitably commodified. Through sculpture and installation, she explores the various ways in which this commodification permeates contemporary culture and makes its way into daily social interactions. Often, this is manifested in the overusing of certain terms and phrases until they completely lose their meaning. In this context, repurposing found objects serves as a dual metaphor. These once- functional items have now been transformed into gimmicky, non-functional devices that playfully deceive and ultimately 'disappoint’ in their lack of function. Their sleek metallic surfaces, smooth curves, and vibrant screens invite closer interaction, only to reveal that the buttons don't work, and the handles are merely plungers. Recent group shows include: ABG emerging: Collection 01 at Alice Black (2024), In between/ness: Women tales from Latin America at Somers Gallery (2024), Asphodel Meadows at Staffordshire St by Studio Chapple (2023) and Hall of mirrors for PLOP by Georgia Stephenson (2023). Can the ancient Spirits of Comedy & Tragedy kick theatre's dead corpse back to life? Thorax and Andromedus, the Spirits of Comic and of Tragic theatre, look down in horror on the earth, where theatre is dead. Above them loom the gods – Old Night and Desire Itself, who will destroy them for having let theatre die. Across a gulf are the Screen Spirits, who are having a golden age. Our heroes scramble about in mounting panic, till finally deciding to incarnate on earth as humans. But down in the world, things don’t go according to plan…. Columbina Theatre Company combines the verse drama skills of Peter Oswald (Globe Theatre, NT, West End, Broadway,) with the Commedia brilliance of Howard Gayton (Ophaboom,) to offer highly wrought and richly comic language in combination with intensely physicalised fooling and clowning, in a play which lays bare the spiritual crisis of contemporary theatre, and asks, what will we do without it? Sessions will reflect the disciplinary range of speakers and may feature presentations, performances, workshops etc. The aim is to create an open, multi-disciplinary space in which to introduce audiences (students and the public alike) to a wide range of creative practices that inspire new ideas about how to make new work. For this Creative Talk we invite Fiona Williams to speak about her debut novel ‘The House of Broken Bricks’, which was published in the UK by Faber. She will share her imaginative ambitions alongside her ‘practice as research’, and interest in ‘craft’ and creativity. This will be followed by a reading and opportunity for questions. Fiona Williams is a writer and the author of the debut novel The House of Broken Bricks, which was the winner of the 2021 Bridport Prize, Peggy Chapman-Andrews First Novel Award. She holds an MA with Distinction in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University and is currently completing a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Exeter. Born and raised in South-East London, she now lives with her family in the West Country, where her writing focuses primarily on rurality and the relationships between identity, belonging, nature and landscape. For this Creative Talk we welcome Scott Thurston to share his practice. He will explore his key creative and theoretical influences, discuss major projects and illustrate his ideas with short performances. Scott Thurston's kinepoetic practice (literally movement making) is a mode of integrating poetry and dance in performance, developed over the last twenty years out of, amongst other things, Thurston's engagement with Gabrielle Roth's Five Rhythms movement meditation practice. This work overlaps with his research in creative psychotherapy with the Arts for the Blues project (www.artsfortheblues.com), and recent training as a person-centred counsellor. Scott Thurston first began writing on the London experimental poetry scene in the late 1980s. He joined the University of Salford in 1994, setting up a degree in English and Creative Writing, followed by the Masters in Creative Writing: Innovation and Experiment and a PhD pathway in Creative Writing. Scott co-organised The Other Room – an experimental poetry reading series in Manchester – for ten years and is founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of British and Irish Innovative Poetry. Since 2004, he has been developing a creative practice integrating dance and poetry which he calls kinepoetics. Following this interest into a collaboration with Dance Movement Psychotherapist Vicky Karkou and Counselling Psychologist (and partner of twenty-six years) Joanna Omylinska-Thurston, led to the founding of Arts for the Blues, a new creative group psychotherapy model. Scott's selected poems, Turning, was published by Shearsman in 2023.
