Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas | The Hochstein School
Oct 6, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Plymouth
Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas featuring composer Roberto Sierra October 5, 2024 7pm at Onondaga Community College, Syracuse, N.Y.October 6, 2024 4pm at Hochstein Performance Hall, Rochester, N.Y.Rochester, N.Y.--“Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas features performances from chamber ensemble fivebyfive as well as musicians from Society for New Music (SNM), with each group hosting a concert in their respective home city. The program focuses on Latin American themes but also explores the profound connections and mutual understanding that our stories can create between us. fivebyfive is a Rochester, N.Y based chamber ensemble featuring flute, clarinet, electric guitar, bass, and piano. SNM provides opportunities for musicians in Central New York to showcase their talent while performing concerts that feature new compositions. Anchoring the “Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas program is a new NYSCA-funded work by Roberto Sierra of Ithaca, N.Y. With a Support for Artists grant, fivebyfive commissioned the Grammy-nominated and Latin Grammy winner to produce “Sonidos del Tlön”. Sierra uses the magic realism found in a short story by 20th-century Argentinian writer Jorge Borge as inspiration. Exploring fantasy and reality is a common theme in Latin American literature. Many creators use this oppositional device to make sense of a fraught present and uncertain future. “Sierra does an extraordinary job of taking us into a musical twilight zone. Even he says some of his music is absurd— like mimicking the screech of a bird--but he wants to experiment with sound. I think listeners will definitely find this fantastical,” proclaimed Laura Lentz, fivebyfive’s Artistic Director. Sierra will attend both concerts and headline the pre-concert chats that occur 30 minutes prior to the start of each program. Other music presented will include works by Clarice Assad, Miguel del Aguila, Gabriela Lena Frank, inti figgis-vizueta, and Angélica Negrón. Intertwined with the musical pieces will be an original presentation by Rochester poet, Henry I Padrón-Morales. During the intermission of the Rochester concert, professional baker Ingrid Gonzalez will provide Latin American pastries through her business Simply Delicious Treats. Coffee Connection, a social enterprise that sells fair-trade, organic, sustainably farmed coffee, will offer individual servings and bagged coffee from Latin America as well. Additionally, a collaborative experience called, “Create Your Own Fantastical Story”, will take place on Sunday September 29, 2024, at 2pm. Author Marla Brandt conducts an hour-long workshop for all ages at Writers & Books located at 740 University Avenue, Rochester, New York. Members of fivebyfive will be present to offer their stories. “We hope participants will want to share what they write when they attend the concert the weekend after the workshop,” said Laura Lentz, Artistic Director of fivebyfive. “Our goal is to make every concert experience transformative and give our audiences an opportunity for their own artistic expression.”

Creative Talk: Ronnie Deelan | The House (Main Stage)
Oct 10, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Plymouth
This event is part of our Creative Talks series that feature practitioners/makers/artists who work in a variety of disciplines, media and forms across the creative arts, including: the visual arts, design, performance, craft-work, creative writing and more. The series aims to address questions about the nature of ‘creativity’ and ‘practice as research’, featuring speakers who will share their work, the processes they use, their influences, and their own experiences of professional practice. Sessions will reflect the disciplinary range of speakers and may feature presentations, performances, workshops etc. The aim is to create an open, multi-disciplinary space in which to introduce audiences (students and the public alike) to a wide range of creative practices that inspire new ideas about how to make new work. For this Creative Talk we welcome Ronnie Deelan for an audiovisual deep dive into his creative brain. With a practice that spans every possible creative direction, this event brings the audience inside his mind for a brief moment. During this event, we see how it’s possible to be so distracted yet still focused. Ronnie’s artistic practice revolves around the exploration of synthesis, with a particular emphasis on crafting imaginative soundscapes. In his animation work, he delves into the relationship between audio and visual elements, experimenting with speculative design and soundscapes. Additionally, his recent drawing projects have focused on the realm of speculative biology, drawing connections between this field and historical scientific explorations. His biggest recent achievement is a sound art sculpture presented in China, consisting of a horn measuring 10 meters in length and 3 meters in height at its tallest point, symbolizing change and connection. Listening through the horn offers a fresh perspective, revealing the beauty of everyday sounds. Additionally, it serves as a communication tool, extending the reach of human voices and enriching the park's sonic landscape. Alongside his artistic pursuits, Ronnie is also the founder of “White Noise” at the Royal College of Art. Starting out as a monthly event, it transformed into an independent nomadic event and record label that provides a platform open to anyone to showcase and experience sound experiments. Ronnie is also a passionate educator with over 9 years of experience in higher education. His interest in education was born from a love for DIY synth electronics, the difficulties faced with self-learning, and the drive to share his knowledge. Joe Avati - WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE - Comedy Show Tour - Plymouth, MA | Plymouth Memorial Hall
Oct 11, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Plymouth
Join us for an unforgettable night of laughter with Joe Avati's, WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE … Comedy show at Plymouth Memorial Hall, Friday, October 11th. This show is G rated - and suitable for children 10 and over. In Joe Avati's new show he asks you to leave your political correctness at the door as he delivers his hilarious insights on how times have changed, for better or worse, since he grew up as a teenager in the 80’s. Internationally renowned for his inimitable style Avati, who is Australian born with an Italian heritage, is a master of treading the very fine line saying what everyone seems to think but no one dares to say whilst not resorting to the use of profanities or vulgar shock tactic routines in doing so. In his latest offering WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE… he tackles the 'then versus now' generational differences of today's kids, the complexities of modern day parenting compared to the strict upbringing of yesteryear and threaded throughout all of this he tackles the minefield of cancel culture, the woke brigade and why people are over political correctness. His observations are not only deadly accurate but extremely relatable to all ages. This is a show for all the family. Bring your parents to highlight how much they have changed since they were your age, bring your friends to laugh and reminisce about growing up as teenagers when you were that age and most importantly bring your kids so that they know what you went through “when I was your age…” We will see you at the show!

Plymouth
With Dr Kayla Parker and Dr Stuart Moore Experience the City in a novel and immersive way at the University’s Immersive Vision Theatre with a unique screening of Flow + Cadence, a 360˚ film created by film-makers Kayla Parker and Stuart Moore. This innovative film provides an all-encompassing view of the River Plym and its estuary, captured from kayaks. The screening offers a fresh perspective of the landscape, filmed in autumn last year and originally premiered during the Being Human Festival. Flow + Cadence takes viewers on a journey around the River Plym, featuring scenes from the Tory Brook upstream from Marsh Mills—a historically waterway significant for bringing sailing ships to Plympton—the upper estuary known as the Laira, and the Cattewater where it flows into Plymouth Sound. Dr Parker and Dr Moore will be present to introduce their film, share insights from their kayaking adventures, and discuss their ongoing research on the River Plym and its estuary. They will highlight the environmental challenges faced by this riverscape, such as the impacts of the climate emergency and increased habitat pressure, and explain their methods of filming from kayaks. The creation of Flow + Cadence was supported by a Start Something Women in Immersive Tech Award granted to Kayla Parker by Real Ideas.
