CONNOR RATLIFF presents THE ACTING CLASS | The Gateway Theatre
Jan 31, 2025 (UTC-8)
Jackson
An improv show disguised as an acting class, from the creator of the “Dead Eyes” podcast. Professional actor ( Mean Girls ) and award-winning podcaster ( Dead Eyes ) Connor Ratliff is a fixture of the NYC improv comedy scene -- a performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre for over a decade, where his George Lucas Talk Show developed a cult following and became the subject of an award-winning documentary. Ratliff is also a classically trained thespian who graduated with honors from the prestigious Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts over a quarter of a century ago, making his professional debut on the stage of the Royal Court Theatre in London’s West End. During that same year, he also performed at Buckingham Palace for Queen Elizabeth II. In the decades that followed, he has accumulated numerous credits as a star of stage, screen and stream, appearing in multiple Netflix Original Films as well as content on CBS, NBC, FOX, TBS, Home Box Office, Amazon Prime and the now-defunct comedy channel, Seeso. But none of that matters now. What matters now is “CONNOR RATLIFF presents THE ACTING CLASS,” an unending series of public workshop performances where he will, before your very eyes, demonstrate what acting truly IS. For this special SF Sketchfest edition, Connor welcomes a longtime collaborator and friend to THE ACTING CLASS – professional actor/podcaster Griffin Newman ( The Tick , Vinyl , Blank Check podcast) – for an in-depth discussion of their shared craft and a full-bodied demonstration of Newman's unexplored potential that could, perhaps, push him to his breaking point. This performance will be slightly interactive and completely improvised, lasting somewhere between 75 and 90 minutes, with occasional opportunities for students in attendance to ask questions. Defiantly self-indulgent and beyond pointless, THE ACTING CLASS is your opportunity to witness the kind of greatness – only slightly appreciated by The Industry – that has kept Connor Ratliff steadily employed for nearly half of the past 9 years. PRAISE FOR CONNOR RATLIFF: The New Yorker: “Connor Ratliff is a brilliant and funny comedic performer and actor.” Vulture: “Intentionally preposterous… utterly funny.” Vanity Fair: “An Improv Star.” The Financial Times: “Funny.” PRAISE FOR GRIFFIN NEWMAN: FilmSchoolRejects.com: “Newman... is proving to be one of the best new character actors of his generation.”

Jackson
Union League Club of Chicago and Chicago Bar Association Present Panel Discussion: In Their Hands: The Story of Ronnie Carrasquillo Redemption and Justice: Ronnie Carrasquillo’s Fight for Freedom Wednesday, February 5, 2025 5:00 p.m. – Registration/Check-in 5:30 p.m. – Program Union League Club of Chicago 65 West Jackson Boulevard, Chicago, Illinois After nearly 47 years in prison and a decades-long battle for justice, Ronnie Carrasquillo is free. But his story is far from over. Join the Union League Club of Chicago’s Administration of Justice Subcommittee and the Chicago Bar Association for an engaging and thought-provoking conversation on justice, redemption, and reform. This panel discussion will examine Ronnie Carrasquillo’s extraordinary journey—from a shocking 200-to-600-year sentence to his eventual release and pursuit of a second chance. Ronnie’s fight for freedom is the subject of the new documentary “In Their Hands”, airing on WTTW (11.1) on Friday, December 27, at 9:00 pm, and streaming at PBS.org (pbs.org/show/in-their-hands) and on the PBS app from December 27 through the end of January. Ronnie now faces the challenge of rebuilding his life at age 66. His story raises pressing questions about rehabilitation, parole reform, and the complexities of justice in America. Join the conversation with our distinguished panelists: · Ronnie Carrasquillo · Jennifer Soble | Executive Director, Illinois Prison Project · Chick Hoffman | Of Counsel, the Office of the State Appellate Defender · Dan Protess | Director and Producer, In Their Hands Together, they will explore themes of accountability, remorse, and systemic reform—challenging us to rethink how our justice system balances punishment and redemption. Welcome to Puff Puff Paint-Pouring! Get ready for a fun and creative evening filled with art and good vibes. Join us on Friday October 11th, 2024 at 6:30 PM at The Seed Cellar for a unique paint pouring. This Month Jill Maufort will be teaching us the wonder art form of paint pouring! Lets get to know Jill Maufort a little bit better: I am a mostly self taught artist. I was blessed with a mother that was very artistic. She inspired and encouraged me to pursue my passion in art and creativity. I put my painting on a back burner while raising my girls and making a living. Then I took the path of raising horses, training and teaching natural horsemanship. A very full filling and joyful part of my life. I finally made time to get back to my passion for creating art. I discovered alcohol ink art and acrylic paint pouring. Oh WOW! Instead of trying to be a perfectionist, I fell in love with this art form! I started to just enjoy the process of creating unique and beautiful paintings. I love teaching and sharing with others how fun and therapeutic it is to create these one of a kind paintings. I’m so excited to share these techniques at the next Puff Puff Paint class at the Seed Cellar. I hope you will join us for a fun and creative evening! -Jill Maufort Within us all lies a creative artist, lets unleash them together while enjoying some puff puff pass moments with friends.
