We're delighted to welcome author/illustrator Maddie Frost back to An Unlikely Story for a Saturday Storytime event! Maddie will read her newest picture book, Bear in a Bathrobe, about a bear who learns to step outside of his comfort zone to have some winter fun with his friends. Following the reading, Maddie will lead a draw-along activity and sign books! We'll also have bear-themed treats available. This event is free, but signups are required as space is limited! This event will be held in our third floor studio space. We hope you can join us! ABOUT THE BOOK: A delightful new picture book that encourages readers to step outside of their comfort zone with the help of a security blanket and some good pals, from powerhouse creator Maddie Frost. It's wintertime and Bear is ready to stay indoors and cozy up in his bathrobe until spring. His bathrobe is the ultimate indoor experience because it keeps his ears toasty, has pockets for all of his snacking essentials, and allows for maximum relaxation all season long. His friends look like they're having so much fun skating outside, and he could join them if he wanted to, but he's too busy having quality indoor alone time in his bathrobe to even think about going out into the wild. Besides, what if he fell and hurt himself, or slipped through the ice, or skated too far away from home? Winter is clearly the time for hibernation, not outdoor adventures. But when Bear's friends share what makes them feel safe when they tackle new and sometimes scary experiences, Bear might just be ready to venture into the great outdoors and risk falling on the ice. Maddie Frost's new picture book invites readers to courageously tackle new--and slightly frightening--experiences and reminds them that it's not about whether you fall or not, but how you get back up. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Maddie Frost is a children's author-illustrator from Massachusetts. Her books focus on funny characters and are packed with heart. Most of Maddie's ideas come from emotional and personal places that are spun into a hilarious story. She uses her anxious and worried brain to make art and relate to readers of all ages. When Maddie is not making books, she's hanging out with her two pups, Mozzy and Remy. Information Source: An Unlikely Story | eventbrite

Padma Venkatraman | An Unlikely Story

Arts
Award-winning author Padma Venkatraman (The Bridge Home, Born Behind Bars) joins us for the release of Safe Harbor, her uplifting novel in verse for middle readers. Geetha's life gets turned upside-down when she and her mother move from India to Rhode Island, leaving everything she's ever known behind. She finds comfort in music and poetry, as well as her new friend Miguel, who helps her to rescue an injured seal stranded on the beach. As her frustrations with the world grow, she discovers that sometimes release is necessary for growth. Padma will discuss Safe Harbor and answer audience questions! Following her discussion, she will sign books. Tickets for this event are free, but we ask that all guests RSVP as we have limited seats available. ABOUT THE BOOK: An uplifting novel in verse about an immigrant girl adjusting to life in the US through her love of nature, music, and poetry, by the award-winning author of The Bridge Home. When Geetha and her mom move from India to Rhode Island after her parents’ divorce, they leave everything Geetha loves behind—her family, her friends, her dog, and all that’s familiar. As if that’s not hard enough, Geetha is bullied at her new school for her clothes, her food, and her English (who knew so many English words could be spelled or pronounced differently in the US—or just be altogether different!). She finds some solace in playing her flute and writing poetry, and even more when she meets Miguel, a kid with whom she has a lot in common, and the two of them help rescue an injured harp seal stranded on the beach. But Geetha can feel her anger building over lots of things—careless people who pollute the sea and hurt animals, and her mom for making her move. She’s never been so sad and angry. She can see a lot of her fears mirrored in the injured seal when she visits it at the Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Center, and this broadens her understanding of survival skills. And when she and Miguel start a beach-clean-up venture, she’s surprised to find how many kind kids are out there. Geetha is torn as the time comes to let the seal go, knowing she’ll miss him, but wanting the best for him. She’s learning to live with mixed feelings and accept that while there will always be rough waters, there are plenty of safe harbors too. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Padma Venkatraman (padmavenkatraman.com) was born in India and became an American after living in five countries and working as an oceanographer. She also wrote Born Behind Bars (South Asia Book Award, Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People), The Bridge Home (Walter Award, Golden Kite Award, Global Read-Aloud), A Time to Dance (IBBY selection, ALA Notable), Island’s End (CCBC Choice, South Asia Book Award), and Climbing the Stairs (ALA/Amelia Bloomer List, Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People). She lives in Rhode Island. Information Source: An Unlikely Story | eventbrite
