The TABOO Exhibition LABA Berlin 2023 will present an exploration of the forgotten rituals of Keyvermestn and Feldmesten. These ceremonies, performed by women in Ashkenazi Jewish communities across Eastern Europe towards Yom Kipur, involved measuring graves to honor and plead with the dead. The act of measuring a graveyard raises questions about the meaning behind it - is it an attempt to quantify the enigma of death, to connect the realms of the living and the deceased, or to delineate the boundaries of a community? This feminine and intimate ritual serves as an alternative to the weaponization of grief and militarized mourning seen in our world today. The exhibition invites visitors to participate in this ceremony, to give the deceased a place among the living, and to contemplate the possibility of inheriting and preserving such customs from a vanished world.
