Ikebana | Darts Hill Garden Park - Maple Activity Center

Ikebana is a mindful practice of artfully arranging cut flowers, stems, and leaves. Learn while creating with Jenny. Rooted in centuries of aesthetic refinement, Ikebana is a meditative practice that celebrates nature, balance, and the changing seasons. We will begin with a projected presentation on the Ohara School of Ikebana, which emphasizes seasonal materials and naturalistic landscapes. There will be completed arrangements available for close study, providing a visual example of the fundamental principles of design, space, and line. Next you will put these principles into practice by creating your own unique arrangement under Jenny’s guidance. You'll take home not only a beautiful floral arrangement but also an appreciation for the mindful artistry of Ikebana. This hands-on workshop introduces the spiritual essence and foundational theories of the Ohara School of Ikebana.Participants will learn to create a harmonious arrangement using seasonal branches and flowers. Approximately 90 Mins Intro (10 mins): History and basic theory of Japanese floral art. Practice (40 mins): Step-by-step guided demonstration and hands-on arrangement Review (30 mins): Individual critique, professional adjustments, and photography. All materials will be pre-set at each seat, including seasonal flowers, container (plastic/ceramic), floral foam, and instructional handouts. Floral shears will be available for use Take-home: Participants may take home their completed arrangement (including the container and foam). Attire: Please wear comfortable, casual clothing suitable for working with water and plants. The workshop includes all materials. Your instructor: Jenny Li is a certified instructor of the Ohara School of Ikebana. With 15 years of dedicated practice in the art of Japanese floral design, she is an active member of both the North American Ohara Teachers Association (NAOTA) and the Vancouver Ikebana Association (VIA). Since 2023, Jenny has operated her Ikebana studio in South Surrey, where she has inspired and mentored nearly a hundred students. Her commitment to the craft was highlighted last year when she participated in the Vancouver Sakura Show and Spring Show, where her floral compositions received widespread acclaim. Jenny is passionate about sharing the elegance and philosophy of Ikebana with the local community. This class is hands-on in a covered outdoor space, so dress for the weather in clothes that you don't mind getting a little dirty and prepare to enjoy an afternoon of education and creativity!
