If you're only in Datong for a short time then location matters. The hotel tries hard with free canned drinks, welcome dessert and friendly staff but there are no shops next to the hotel at all although you can walk to a local neighbourhood about 700-800m away. The old city wall is not exactly near even if you can see parts of it from your hotel window. There is no subway in Datong so if you're interested in attractions in the old town then you need to factor in taxi costs unless you fancy a bit of a walk in the bitter cold. Breakfast is very local and very substantial.

Stay was nearly perfect with only a few minor gripes. When we asked for extra pillows we were told there were none available, the gym was a little bit small, but the 24 hour gym opening time was excellent. The western food at the breakfast buffet seemed like it had bit sitting out for a while and wasn't super fresh. However, the Chinese food was excellent and the staff were happy to make some vegetarian fried rice for us to suit our dietary needs. Overall a very pleasant stay and we would recommend it to anyone visiting Datong. The staff were so helpful and kind.

Bed was very comfortable and staff were generally helpful altho a couple of the reception staff were quite brusque, also they spoke really fast in an accent I couldn't always understand. I think they should be more mindful of visitors from abroad. The most helpful and courteous member of staff was the bellhop. The hotel claims to be non-smoking which is a joke cuz my room reeked of cigarette smoke and I told the staff so when she brought me there but she just said oh they've already turned down the room. Since I stayed for only 1 night, I didn't make a fuss. But non-smoking rooms are generally a joke in China, there is no enforcement and smokers have no consideration for others. Non-smokers in this country have no rights.

Lovely hotel right in the heart of the walled city. Be aware entrance is trough a hairdresser. Spacious and modern rooms, very clean and traditional. Before you visit be advised, taxis cannot enter walled town therefore cannot reach the hotel. Ask taxi driver to drop you off at the East gate of the walls and from there take the golf cart like vehicles (only taxi service allowed within the walled area) to reach the hotel. If you speak mandarin you may be able to get the service for free from the hotel, couldn't get it before check in but they kindly drove me to the East Gate for free when I left. Closest gate to the hotel is the South but has no vehicular access, if carrying luggage, always use East Gate.
