Blacksmiths Arms Inn
4.4/587 Reviews
Great pub in a great location near Scarborough and the Cleveland Way. Comfortable rooms, clean bathrooms, and provisions, including tea, coffee, biscuits, water, shampoo, and shower gel, are restocked daily. Really friendly and helpful staff, who went out of their way to help when the twin room we thought we had booked did not exist, and we needed breakfast earlier than the start time as we were leaving early to walk the Cleveland Way. Please note that if you are booking a room through a third party website, they all advertise the Blacksmiths Arms as having twin rooms when they do not. And breakfast is served from 8.30am. Overall, a very pleasant stay in a lovely pub.

Astor York Hostel

2519 Great value for money Review of Astor York Pending review I was heading to York for the Christmas market and, knowing that I would spend most of my time out and about, wanted my accommodation to be as inexpensive as possible. A weekend at the Astor York set me back less than £40, and I would say I'm grateful I stayed here for more reasons than just the low price. I hadn't realised that the Christmas market closes quite early, and I found myself back at the hostel earlier than I anticipated. Luckily, there is a common area where you can watch Netflix with the other guests – a nice treat at the end of a cold day. I was admittedly a bit taken aback by the very old-fashioned bathrooms that look straight out of the 1960s. But the hostel was clean and well-maintained. My 30-bed dorm did not feel too crowded, and I was grateful for the cages under beds. My one gripe about the dorm room would be a lack of sockets and lights at beds; it was impossible to charge my phone as I was on the top bunk, so I had to charge it in the common area instead. While I only needed to use the fridge, it looked like the kitchen was well-stocked and spacious. There was also a little bar that did happy hour, though I never made it back early enough to take advantage. The location is a bit of a walk from York's city centre. However, it's quite an easy route, and it's also convenient for accessing the train station. I recommend getting up and out a bit earlier and walking along the ancient wall from Micklegate, which is not far from the hostel. Overall, my stay was great value for money and I'd recommend Astor York to any solo travellers.
The Plough

We recently stayed at The Plough for 4 nights and I highly recommend it! The venue is fantastic, amazing wood burning fire, beautiful bar, restaurant and conservatory area with lovely surrounding countryside. The staff were so friendly and helpful the whole time and very welcoming! The food was delicious and great portions and choice! The room was brilliant, beautifully decorated and great amenities - everything we needed! Honestly very much recommend a stay here! Thank you to everyone at The Plough for such a wonderful stay!
Safestay York Micklegate

The interior decoration of this youth travel is good and the price is relatively affordable. Because there are many tourists in York on weekends, the beds are limited. I barely booked a mixed 6-person room, but the bad luck is that the room seems to have me as a woman, and there is a big brother who is loud, talking to himself, and getting up at 3 in the morning and turning on the lights directly, resulting in a poor sleep experience. It should be noted that the toilet and bathroom of this youth travel are very small and shared in 6 people, not the same floor, which is very inconvenient.
The Inn South Stainley

A really lovely, rustic, warm venue, a little out of Harrogate away from the busyness. It's easy to find as it's just off the A61. We had a super-king room, it was in a little out-house next to the Inn, you walk past a pretty garden surrounded by fairy lights. The room had a very log cabin feel, clean and quiet with a lovely view of the garden. We had dinner in the Inn (the mushroom and spinach pie was incredible) prices were reasonable; £18 for a Pie meal and a drink on a Monday. Breakfast from 8 - 10am, it was the best breakfast I've ever had at a hotel! We ordered Smoked salmon with scrambled eggs, presented beautifully and tasted amazing; Cereals, pastries, overnight oats, yogurt and fruit available to help yourself to. The best part of the whole experience was the staff; every encounter we had with a member of staff was a positive one, they did what they could to make your stay an enjoyable one and dealt with any request with hast and were all extremely friendly. Tymo who greeted us and showed us to our room, the tall man and young blonde girl that served us at dinner, the older gentleman who served us at breakfast (super friendly and professional with a great sense of humor) I feel bad that we didn't get all of their names, but we literally couldn't fault any of them! A fantastic venue and truly deserving of a 5*, we would highly recommend it.
Orchard Club - Newton House

From check in to check out, what a friendly, olde world place this is, Arrived early into a very small courtyard car park which we did find a space, though there is ample parking next door as the owners have bought next door to re develop, shown straight to our room by a lovely, friendly lady Our room was on the road, to the left of the archway, we had our own front door which took us in to a lovely little hallway and a delightful room, probably one of the cleanest we've stayed in and I've stayed in lots of high end hotels, The noise from the road at night could have been a problem but we were provided with ear plugs which we didn't use, The breakfast choice was amazing for a B & B, all freshly cooked to order and Karen our waitress was lovely, felt we'd known her all our lives, a lovely lady, a credit to the business, Right opposite the bus station so if you wanted to go to York or Harrogate, buses on the doorstep, Plenty of eating places and pubs, quiz night and market day on Wednesday with its own town crier, what a treat Knaresborough....what a beautiful place, plenty of walks along the river nydd, beautiful buildings and of course the viaduct, Castle and gardens, was probably the hottest day of the year so we couldn't manage a further walk to mother shiptons caves but that will be for another day

I accidentally booked for the wrong hotel accidently last minute so it would’ve been nice if they allowed for me to cancel it, but since they didn’t allow for a cancellation fee, it would’ve meant that I’d lose my money for the entire booking, therefore I made sure I attended the night

Clifton
With free parking, the old city attractions are within walking distance, very good. Breakfast is available for purchase. There is a self-service kitchen available, with few clean people and plenty of space. The open space on the first floor is also large and comfortable. Room is 6 beds, normal buddy style.
YHA Whitby
4.3/575 Reviews
YHA Whitby's location is stunning - right by the 199 steps, St Mary's Church, the Abbey and with beautiful views across the river and town. It's a beautiful historic building with an absolutely lovely private garden. The table football was also much enjoyed! Abbey entry is free for hostel guests which was a bonus. However, it feels like it is coasting on its location and exterior, and was a disappointment compared with other YHA hostels. Firstly check-in is 3-10pm, despite the YHA website saying it's 24hrs (hopefully they will update this). There's also not a 24hr reception, again contrary to the YHA website. There's a sign directing you to the cafe out of these hours, but it was a big contrast to other hostels where there's usually someone around to ask for info, provide key for the luggage room, answer qs and deal with any issues even if you can't check in yet. Definitely not a warm welcome. The room was decent but the shower leaked all over the floor - a sign said to leave the showerhead pointing down to avoid floods, but the bath tap stuck out so much this meant you couldn't get under it and the mixer tap was awkward. I doubt that any of the management have tried showering in it. The bathroom is looking tired. No binliners in bins, and no storage in rooms either (they have changed completely from the TripAdvisor photos which are from 2016!!) Loud music from the kitchen underneath us at 730am on Monday morning. Overall, the hostel could do with some TLC - and will need it if features like the beautiful conservatory, where grass is now growing through the glass panes, are to last. The cafe is haphazard and the breakfasts a shambles - no trays, cutlery running out, coffee running out, juice running out (and not being speedily replaced as happens elsewhere), bits being left off the toast machine so the toast falls on the floor, etc. They seemed to only cook 4 eggs at a time and have no queuing system so we had to wait a long while for cooked breakfasts while others came straight in and were served immediately. Some staff were friendly but others were completely uninterested. We wanted to mention these issues quietly to reception as we left, but guess what... shutters up again and no one around.
