We have just spent eight wonderful days at Heritage Marari. Bruce was our host. Heritage Marari is a collection of traditional Keralan houses collected by Bruce's family and assembled on-site next to a backwater leading directly to the Indian Ocean, 10 minutes' walk to Chethi Beach and a 5 minute tuk tuk ride to Marari Beach. The houses are beautiful, clean and comfortable and the grounds are teeming with extraordinary birds and butterflies. Bruce is a consummate host, and he and his small team met every de***d of two adults and three teenagers, booking tuk tuks and taxis, arranging trips to Alleppey and the backwaters, into the hills and to Kochi; and sending us to a local clothing shop to supply our son when the airline lost his suitcase. He was full of information and advice, and even took us to a neighbour's house to watch the World Cup Final! The highlight, for us, though, was the food. We ate breakfast and supper there every day. Bruce serves what he calls 'home cooking' but which is, truthfully, some of the best food we have ever eaten, and that's coming from two professional chefs. Morning and evening, Bruce and his chef served a different set of dishes from the local traditions of the Alleppey region, and every one was a revelation. At Heritage Marari we felt immersed in the real Kerala, and experienced our surroundings in a way that wouldn't have been possible at a resort. It doesn't have the frills of a high-end venue but the care and affection lavished on us were far beyond what we would have found at a fancy hotel. Bruce honestly made us feel like family, and this made our holiday very special. We will definitely be returning to this little gem!
