The Old Priory

Weird entrance - noone around, just my name and a key on the table. All the lights were out, so the halls were gloomy and had really bad signage. The rooms are named oddly and yet don't have a name plate on them. You have to look at the tiny map, in the gloom, to know where you are - had to get out my phone's torch. Ask *not* to be on the lower floor as people walking above you will wake you up (happened twice). There are ”strictly no entrance” signs on the door to the bathroom - doors were shut (possibly locked) when we got there. Manager came up and asked aggressively ”Can I *help* you” after I had picked up the key and was in the midst of opening up the room's door in the gloom of the hall which I didn't appreciate. At least two fire exit doors were locked (I checked them specifically in the 'guest lounge') so a fire hazard and against fire regulations as well. Excessively spartan rooms. Also, being expected to wash dishes is kind of not okay in a motel - if I'm paying for the 'privilege' of staying there, I won't wash the dishes for you sorry. Overall a poor experience. Could have been way better potentially as the street had lovely big trees and was a graceful looking old building.
Armour Motor Inn

Our stay was comfortable, warm and met our needs while we were in town to visit a terminally ill relative in hospital. Website room rates are lower than what the staff in reception will charge you on check-in - if you plan to stay at this property, suggest booking and paying online to ensure you are charged the advertised rate. When we politely approached reception to first query our charge, then provide feedback to the staff that there were demonstrable discrepancies between website advertised rates and those charged at check-in, staff became aggressive and accused us outright of lying. To this day, the online Saturday night rate that staff claimed categorically would never be available online, remains available to book online at the rate that we advised them. We have since attempted to contact this business twice in writing with indisputable proof that the feedback we provided is true and accurate - we are still waiting for a response but we don’t expect one based on our experience with how this business operates. We are acutely aware of the challenges faced by tourism and hospitality businesses due to the pandemic, and politely approached this business to query what we believed was an error on our bill; when staff categorically rejected this, we asked that our feedback be captured that website rates are lower than rates charged in reception, in the interests of that business avoiding potential issues with ugly customers (which we were not). Their response was absolutely disgraceful, such aggression and abuse should never be directed at customers nor staff in this situation. We will not be back - we don’t give repeat business to dishonest and abusive businesses.
Beechworth Motor Inn

Pros; clean and comfortable, could park right outside your room, usb charging slots at the base of the bedside lamps, Kayo & Netflix available for streaming (if you've an account), reasonably spacious. Walked (<15min) into town for dinner, but rode our bikes into town for b'fast. COVID check-in/out procedures were straight forward. My only suggestion is that the cleaners use a less perfumed cleaner/disinfectant - I suppose it immediately tells you the room has been cleaned, but it's pretty pungent. A bit pricey for a motel, but Beechworth is pretty touristy and pricing was comparable to similar accommodation at the time.
Golden Heritage Accommodation

What a wonderful week we had staying in the two bedroom 'apartment' (more like a duplex) at Golden Heritage. The apartment is set at one end of the large motel property, on the other side of the duck pond, away from the standard motel rooms and accessed by an adjoining road (and much cheaper than an airB&B!). We woke to the sound of birdsong and breakfasted on the deck/BBQ area overlooking the pond. Beechworth is a two minute drive from the motel so easy to access for meals when we didn't want to cook for ourselves in the fully kitted-out kitchen (and there's also a laundry and clothesline). Beechworth is a very good central base to explore as far afield as Bright to the southeast or north to Rutherglen and handy to the King Valley (Chrismont has a restaurant as well as cellar door; Politini also worth a visit) in the south. In the past we've stayed in the standard motel rooms and enjoyed the deck with views over the gorge but decided to try the apartment for our longer stay. The motel also has stand-alone cottages with kitchens and spa baths as other accommodation choices. Jo is helpful with suggestions as to wineries or restarants/cafes to visit and even with last-minute accommodation changes! Very highly recommended.
