I don't often write reviews but this place really does need one. I have stayed in many hotels in Birmingham city centre over recent years - this was my first and last stay here. I booked fairly late and didn't think too deeply about where I had opted for - simply looking for somewhere to keep the cost down for the business and within easy walking distance of my meetings. I paid £162 for a single occupancy room and I think it fair to say that this was the worst value room I have had for a very long time. At check in I was alerted to the fact that I hadn't paid for breakfast so I shelled out a further £18 thinking a good cooked breakfast would be a useful start to the day - more on that later. When I finally made it to the third floor - one lift - and wound my way around the maze of corridors to Room 340, I then suffered what I can only describe as real dismay when I stepped into the room. Cramped, narrow, and with that dingy ochre paint that used to be the preserve of British Rail waiting rooms. Paint which nicely captures the greasy paw prints of previous occupants where they have fumbled with their key card to find the light slot. The last ones were presumably just back from resurfacing a road or something as the wall was filthy. Looking around the room - no water; thought they could at least have given me an 80p bottle of water for £162 a night but apparently not. Ventilation is something I do pay attention to. The room was cold - unusually - but the aircon was locked at 20c so I thought I would switch it off completely and open the window - but the window couldn't be opened although with the drunks in the precinct outside in fine voice most of the night that was probably no bad thing. Fast forward to breakfast. I discovered that £18 only bought me a continental breakfast - I've paid less in 4* hotels in Paris - and that consisted of large bowls of the sort of cereals we used to give our children but now know we shouldn't: Coco Pops for goodness sake and cornflakes. £18.... Of course I could have paid a further £5 for something cooked but chose not to on a point of principal. I had paid less than £23 for supper in the city centre the night before: two courses at an excellent Italian up by the cathedral. Quite how this hotel has the cheek to charge more for what they had on offer defeats me. So - my advice would be take more care with your hotel choices in Birmingham than I did on this occasion - and don't even think about using this one unless you're loaded or you're resurfacing roads.
