This was my seventh stay at what was once my go to choice of hotel in Chambéry, after a disappointing sixth stay last year I looked around for an alternative but couldn't find anything as good value, so decided to give it one last try. We were allocated room 205. Again, given there is now a choice of room size when booking, I wasn't shocked that it was just a room with small window. We again enjoyed the kitchenette and separate toilet/bathroom away from the room itself, but the balcony rooms are much better, at a vastly increased cost. The main problem, yet again, was with the temperature of the room. Air conditioning was turned off and the system locked to heating only. A sign now states it is not possible to switch it from heating to cooling when locked to heating mode, this is good given it was a source of confusion on a previous visit (and even the staff member claimed ignorance on that occasion). It's disappointing the temperature of the room can't be controlled by the guest, but there is a window which can be opened. So we did. Unfortunately our room was directly above, and not far above given it was on the second floor, the outside drinking area for Charlie's bar downstairs (there was no outside drinking area when I was a student here in 1998 and I'm amazed permission was granted given the proximity of hotel rooms). The noise from revellers was unbelievably loud, until the early hours of the morning, it was still noisy at 5am. Additionally, a street which didn't seem busy with cars became like Piccadilly Circus as soon as we tried to sleep with incredibly loud vehicles constantly until the street sweepers started adding to the noise. I can only assume there is an effect of sound bouncing off the walls of the hotel and residence opposite. It really was incredibly noisy, even earplugs had no effect. We did not sleep well at all. Obviously we had turned the heating unit off but incredibly annoyingly it comes back on every morning. The sign said this happened at 9am, making it ever more unbearably hot. Not true, it came on at 8am,then again at 10am once I'd waited for it to come on and turned it off. This, together with niceties being removed (eg tissues, bottle of water, dish washing pack, non slip mat in the shower (it's really dangerous), coffee machine, full complement of crockery /glasses, suitcase stand), together with things that were never great eg only 1 chair in a room for 2, and it looking ever more tired/worn/grubby means they have now definitely lost my future custom. A real shame.
