This rating does NOT include the very nice people running the bar and coffee area nor the ambiance of the seating area around the lobby. They do a fine job. My rating is reflective of the room itself. The bed was comfortable and linens were clean, however the rest of the room had a real “ick factor” that i don’t think I’ve ever experienced at a Marriott. Not sure who is overseeing the housekeeping staff but it does not look as if the tables and furnishings have been well cleaned in a long, long time. At least not in room 329. Thick layers of dust and old smudges of something greasy on the table pedestals and dresser handles. The armoire was pretty battered up, the bath room lighting way to dim to apply makeup, but not so dim as to hide some of the black gunk in the floor grout and tub caulking which I suspect to be mold. Although we had fresh towels daily, one day we were surprised with a couple of unappealing long black hairs in the folds. Sorry, no way they were ours. TWICE we requested of front desk for our body wash to be filled and finally gave up and used the shampoo to wash instead. The complimentary lotion is good for one time use and we only got one over five day stay. What has happened to the attention to detail? Our housekeeper rapped on our door in The morning and we learned quickly spoke No English. Just kept saying “no want your room clean?” I said yes we do, and we would be leaving shortly. She kept shaking her head saying “no English” opened a translation app on her phone and pointed vigorously for me to speak into the app. Really Marriott? Our room (Only) cost for a five night stay? Just under $3,000. And we’re considered Gold level. Still not quite sure how this happened as we thought we had used a combination of points and a rate represented in the mid $300 range. Our bad, but as long time Marriott customers we’ll be paying MUCH closer attention to our confirmation email. NEVER would I have paid this price for this level of a hotel. Also, the pool area was closed for renovations which wasn’t a huge deal although it would have been nice to relax there. What felt like a parting shot of disappointment was our last day. We were “privileged” as gold members to receive automatic late check out at 2pm and confirmed twice we would be checking out late. When we returned to gather our things at 1230, our key had already been deactivated requiring a trip to the front desk and a rush to meet our Uber driver. Lots of options for your stay in Charleston, choose wisely.
