We were lucky to have great weather on Fanjingshan but it's a stiff hike from West Gate and our legs were sore the next day. After our day on the mountain we stopped at a restaurant close to the gate, and returned here on our second night because the food was fresh, tasty, good value, and they have an excellent view of the mountain opposite (see photos). On our second day we took a taxi down the mountain to the nearest town (taxis use the charging points opposite the hotel) but we had trouble getting back and were fortunate to hitch a lift. The West Gate is preferable to East Gate but it's better to have a car."
