The hotel was located in an ancient restored building

I don’t usually leave reviews but after having our lives put on hold for a year after my diagnosis and this was the first time we had gone away without a cloud over our heads I thought I would
Firstly I would like to say lovely hotel, it’s the type of hotels me and my husband like as full of character
We arrived early and the receptionist was friendly and we got told they upgraded our room which was really nice so we left our luggage, and we popped in town done a few bits
When we got back to the hotel we went to our room which was gorgeous our plan was to have room service and enjoy the room which is what we did after a couple of drinks in the bar area which was lovely
Now the down side the shower stank of drains, the pillows on the bed are awful and we got food poisoning from the oysters

My friend and I were visiting this area and it’s Roman sites, so so booked this hotel for us and weren’t disappointed. Friendly staff - all staff note were very friendly. We were both upgraded to suite rooms and they were huge rooms with a small minibar in. The bed was lovely and pillows too, which isn’t always the case. A nice shower and bath too. Early morning call was on time and the breakfast was lovely with all the usual bases covered. Checkout was easy and at 11am today and we were allowed to leave my pal’s car there all day. I would stay here again for sure should I come back to the area.

Recently returned from an overnight stay at GreyFriars Hotel and all in all it was a very enjoyable visit. We upgraded to a Junior Suite and the room was exceptional with plenty of space, comfortable bed and a beautiful bathroom. It was lovely to see that the hotel retains many of its original features which are well integrated with contemporary fittings and sumptuous furnishings. We had dinner and breakfast in the Cloisters restaurant where the food was excellent and all the staff there and throughout the hotel were very attentive and helpful. Car parking was easy in the private car park and there was plenty of space available. When we return to Colchester we will definitely stay there again, it was perfect.

Good comfortable room with plenty of space. Windows did not open so not possible to get any fresh air. Breakfast was good quality and nicely served. The hotel location was handy for the town and parking was easy. I didn't have dinner or use the bar so cannot comment on that.

The greeting staff were very informative and pleasant. They were able to answer any questions we had for our stay.
Unfortunately this didn’t carry through to the bar staff who ignored us when we were waiting to be served and then finally when we were, we seemed to be an inconvenience to them, we left and took our evening customs elsewhere and only used the room to stay in.
The room was average; we found dead insects in the curtains. The bathroom improved our stay and was very comfortable.
Overall, I’d like to see an improvement in the bar staff and the cleanliness of the rooms improved.
