Shap Wells Hotel

Stayed here several times, even a couple of times when they had only just re opened following each of the Covid lockdowns and always enjoyed, had a fab welcome and the rooms are clean. Not saying its perfect for everyone as some of you will not be a fan of the gold and red decor in the rooms , reception and corridors. But its not shabby its just old fashioned. The bathrooms are moden and the bar and restaurant have had a face lift with a not ultra moden colour scheme of cream and blue but it suits the building style. Dont expect spa, gym or pool and dont expect room service or cocktails. But you will always get a warm and friendly welcome and service. The setting is off the beat and track , but worth finding this gem, at the side of the woods , with stream running over waterfall and rock oh and keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels. Food is good at breakfast though no veggie sausages which some did complain about, food is good value in the evening though a limited choice of 4 starters 4 mains and 4 puds including a veggie option. Yorkshire portions for the main and loads of veg. Bar prices higher than pub prices but not that bad for a hotel.

it was great to have a snooker table..they need to put a new cloth on. its old and tatty...xx

Second stay at shap wells hotel but this time we stayed in the family room and was very nice and the breakfast was just great

Although dated the hotel was full of old world charm, clean and comfortable. The cost of replacing the wood, stained and patterned glass and pictures would be enormous and detrimental to the experience. The dining room was lovely and the food excellent. All this backed by very helpful and friendly staff. We will be going back to further enjoy the grounds and wildlife including red squirrels.

What a hidden timeless gem .We enjoyed an excellent meal with really attentive service & great staff. Afterwards, we went to look at their colony of Red Squirrels ! A rare treat in the UK to say the least. With excellent scenery & reasonably easy access .Highly recommend a visit.

Staff friendly and very helpful! Food amazing! Very clean room, comfortable bed and great shower. Beautiful views! A big thank you to all the amazing chefs, bar staff and restaurant staff. Not forgetting the very generous hospitality from Sam who is one of the duty managers! Highly recommend!

Firstly this review is 100% genuine. Nice bedroom oldy world but gomfortable. Meals were nice but not cheap...ie £19.95 for steak pie ... Very good service though and breakfast also quite good but would like poached eggs and maybe scrambled egg with salmon.

What an amazing hotel!!! Its an old building with a vast history that was really interesting. My wife and myself brought our 7 year old along with our two dogs and it was perfect. The grounds and the surrounding area was ace, lots of walks seeing waterfalls within 5 mins of the hotel, there was even vast space for the dogs to run around. Our room was really nice, big and clean with a wounderful view of the stream right outside our window. The hotel its self was clean and had an old country manner look to it. The bar area and dining room was also nice. The food was amazing we all loved it and it didnt cost a kidney. The staff were bloody brillient and really showed 1st class service going the extra step. We missed breakfast as we slept in and they sorted my wife and child out after it had finished with them even sending me some bacon and sausage sandwiches back with them as i stayed in the room with the dogs. My little one had loads of chats with a male member of staff and was given a free great packed lunch with lots of treats in it to take with him that was above all expectations this really made my little one really happy. We are well travelled and i have to say the staff are right up there with the best in the world!!! The hotel was filled with an older generation of guests and there was a coach tour stayiing but that just made my little one happy as he was always being smiled at and spokern too. Not sure hoelw often the hotel is used by familys but i would recommend it fully as it is a true gem that allows young people to learn and explore the countryside. Thankyou we will be back!!!
