We stayed here on one of their special deals which included cream tea, a £50 credit toward dinner, and bed and breakfast along with a glass of fizz on arrival. The cream tea was nice, it was a choice of tea or coffee and two scones each with jam and cream. The fizz was also a nice prosecco. Dinner was a very hit and miss experience, and although I gave the staff at the time a chance to fix it, and the receptionist the next morning another chance, nobody was interested. Our starters were lovely as was my wife's venison; my sirloin steak was not. Whilst it was perfectly medium-rare, it was as tough as old boots and it had little taste. For near £30 it was unacceptable and I ate about half of it before just giving up as it was unpleasant. Even their steak knife didn't want to cut through it. The staff member on the evening explained that due to the way the sirloin is cut it is sometimes very tough. If that is the case then they should warn customers as I would not have chosen the steak. She apologised for the lack of flavour and then, once we said we didn't want a third course, she disappeared and after waiting an age we left never having seen the bill. Next morning I was surprised to find service charge on the bill, but I paid it; nobody offered me an invoice on the evening and we were sat in the bar for an hour after (most of which was spent waiting for someone to serve us). The receptionist didn't inquire as to how our stay was so I told her of my dissatisfaction with the steak, she simply shrugged and said sorry and turned back to a wedding party that had just arrived. I buy steaks from Lidl (at about £4 each) and I produce a far nicer steak than their £29 sirloin was. I suggest they switch to Lidl as the butcher if that is the quality of their current supplier's steak, as the staff member suggested, because we have never had a duff one from them. Service was patchy, it was very attentive in the afternoon but by 9.30pm it was anything but. The room was comfortable, although the kitchen fans being switched on in the morning woke me up quite early. Breakfast was nicely done. For a £300 stay including dinner, bed, breakfast, cream tea and drinks we were far from impressed.
