It's close to the church, so it was nice to be able to do a lot of sightseeing from here. The long-haired female staff member was very kind and helped me in many ways, even though I don't speak much English or Vietnamese. However, the room was not vacuumed and was full of dust, perhaps because it was OK to wear shoes. (Maybe there is no culture of vacuuming in Vietnam?) The bathtub also has grime on it, so it is not recommended to use the bathtub. The cups were also dirty, and there were dead insects in the water heater. (Vietnamese restaurants also have a lot of garbage on the floor, so maybe it's just a national trait that doesn't bother them?) Also, I drank a bottle of beer in the room, but when I paid for it, I felt like I was blown away a little bit. The female staff told me to pay 25,000 VND to the male staff later, but at the time of payment I was charged 35,000 VND (the room slip also said 25,000 VND). Since there is no culture of tipping, it was inevitable to make money, and the amount was not that big, so I paid... The female staff were very nice, It was like, oh my god. If this were the case, it would be a much cheaper guesthouse. I felt like another foreign hotel would have been better💦 It was a hotel where I was able to experience Vietnam, both good and bad!

We absolutely loved our stay at Maison d'Orient. The location is perfect in the middle of the old quarter, we arrived in the middle of the night and our hosts were waiting for us, we never felt unsafe at any given time. The room was in excellwnt condition, clean and fonctional and the breakfast was always delicious. Service and general sweetness ofbour hosts were all remarkable

On a quiet street nearby the best parts of Hanoi center. Staff was warm and top notch. Room was nice, big space. It can be cold in the winter

My husband and I loved the location of this small hotel in an alley just around the corner from St Joseph's cathedral. It was very handy to the sights of the old quarter and to the lake, but reasonably quiet. We had two stays as we did Halong Bay in between. I would recommend paying a little more for a Star Anise room, as it was bigger and much lighter than the Lemongrass room, and also had much better shower pressure (not sure if this applies to all the rooms). We had a room mix up when we arrived, which Michael and I discovered this was an Agoda system error (lesson - make your booking direct, or at least check with the hotel that there booking matches your Agoda one). Breakfast was lovely fresh fruits and yoghurt, tea and coffee, and eggs made to order. Crepes were a nice treat one morning (perhaps cereal could be a another addition?). Service was friendly and welcoming - Michael, Mien and the team were excellent. Would recommend this boutique, family-run hotel as it was great value for money.

The location is great, right in the old quarter but quiet at night time. It is quite hard to find, our taxi driver parked on the road and phoned someone who came to meet us and show us where it was - that was a bit weird at first. Walk up smally alleys to get there and the front is a lovely lush plant area which I found lovely in this crazy city. There is no lift, so be prepared for stairs which we had no problem. Breakfast was ok, not a full buffet but that was nice and a decent selection. The staff are lovely and I think its nicer to stay in a small boutique hotel as it is more personal. They interact with you and happy to give advise. We enjoyed and I would stay again. Rooms nice and big, great comfy bed and shower was good - all what we look for in a hotel.

As soon as we arrived we were so glad we chose Maison, from the warm welcome to the local advice, accommodating our early arrival and later helping us make new travel plans because of bad weather in central Vietnam. We loved our stay here not only because of all of the above but also because of the lovely homely feel to the hotel, very convenient location to see all the sights and great options for food and drink nearby, yet still remaining quiet and calm later in the evenings. We would absolutely stay at Maison again.. in fact we already did! Thank you to everyone at Maison d’Orient for helping us have an enjoyable trip to Vietnam.

A quintessential budget Hanoi hotel. First challenge is finding it being at the end of an alley obscured by foliage. Your taxi will not be able to get down the road off which the alley to the hotel is located so you'll have a short walk. For info the alley is located opposite Au Lac restaurant. Our room was Cinnamon on the 3rd floor, massive room with a double and single bed. Unquestionably in need of some smartening up, no view unfortunately, I could have reached through the window and touched the building next door. There is no lift for guests so consider this if you have mobility issues. Our stay was broken by a Halong Bay overnight cruise but Michael kept the unneeded luggage safely while we were away. Michael also arranged a transfer to Halong Bay, something I had not considered when booking, I'd assumed it would be a short grab taxi to a nearby dock however it takes around 2.5Hrs to get there. Breakfast is a simple affair, tea/coffee/juice toast, preserves, fruits and a 'how do you like your eggs' menu or Pho (noodle soup). The weather was cold while we were there, unusually so apparently, so-much-so we had to go out and buy knock-off North Face coats, without heating the breakfast area was freezing. Not an issue in the bedroom as the aircon has a heat function which we made good use of. WiFi is excellent, no issue hooking up the firestick for a late night movie stream. However the room is big so the small (by modern standards) TV on the opposite wall is about the same size as a mobile phone at arm's length. Location is superb, smack in the middle of the old quarter where, as a tourist, you want to be. Excellent budget hotel in need of some modernisation. 4 stars.
