The only two good things that I can say are that the young lady at the helm of this sinking ship is delightful even though it's one problem after another. There was only one other couple staying at the same time as us. This should have been a BIG heads up when we arrived. The views are amazing except from OUR room. The palm trees were sooo overgrown on the deck/patio that you couldn't see anything without trying to lean over the deck and literally try to pull them apart. The room next to us did not seem to have this problem and being that they were the only others their, I don't know why they put us in this totally obstructed room. There's NO A/C....that's right, Costa Rica with NO A/C. The place is old, run down, dirty and completely disappointing. The "restaurant" had two choices....chicken or a very well done burger. They had a huge menu to look at in the room, but none of it was available. I'm a vegetarian, so I only got a salad. The bar had liquor but was not serving it....no bartender! I woke up the next A.M. and had to RUN to the bathroom due to an issue with the lettuce from the night before. My friend had to go to a non-English pharmacy to find an anti-diarrheal so that we could leave the resort. I felt really badly for Maria because she was in charge of dealing with all of this. She was really nice but very limited as to the help she could offer. I did try the pool however, the only not broken chair ripped right out from under me because the seat was all dry rot. When I went to just step in the pool, the tile was so slippery(slimey) that my foot slipped and I took a nasty fall into the gunite and stairs. The place is for sale and they should not put up these 30 year old pictures, amenities that they don't have, like food and a bartender or tell about the great food and views unless they can provide it. We're very disappointed and should have asked for a refund.

This place recently changed hands, and the restaurant lost its chef. However, they are working diligently to get up to speed before the next tourist season arrives in November. The views from here are spectacular. The staff are super helpful. The menu at the restaurant is extremely limited at this point, but we tried the shrimp alfredo pasta, which was quite good -- pasta was not overcooked and the white sauce was tasty but not gloppy. The Tico Pork Loin was a bit tough, but the passion fruit bbq sauce was fantastic. Currently they have a very limited selection of wine by the glass (red or white) and the full bar is not fully functional. However, they have plans to expand the offerings and service. The rooms look nice -- the "deluxe" have a roof top patios (and kitchens) with outdoor stairs (NOT mobility impaired friendly) and the "standard" rooms have great views and are at the same level as reception, the pool, and the dining room. If plans come to fruition, this should once again be a lovely place to stay in Atenas -- "the best climate in the world" according to National Geographic.

The hotel is very dated. Our kitchen faucet fell off in my hand. It was obvious that it had been glued and taped on. The bugs were horrible, but the hotel did the right thing and moved us. Unfortunately, the next room's plumbing was dated as well and the bathroom faucet squirted water all over the bath. The restaurant food was truly fabulous -- The restaurant is not affiliated with the hotel. Go for the food but don't stay at Barons.

If you’re expecting a “resort” don’t book. Pros: The pool was gorgeous. Views were great. Temps were cool & pleasant. We met an awesome couple from Germany & San Jose. Cons: Pool didn’t have any seating. Restaurant prices were astronomical. (Food & beverage). Walls were so thin we could hear conversation in the next room & their phone ringing. Parking area was gravel & very noisy as all hours. Our room wasn’t clean. Hope this helps. Live & learn.

We had a scheduling issue in our trip, but the hosts were very understanding and gracious during a challenging time. We very much appreciated their understanding and flexibility given that we were having a stressful day due to scheduling problems and trip delays. Thank you Barons Resort!

Had 6 days at BR, and it was a really good stay! The front desk staff was another level! Super friendly, serviceminded and in general just super nice! Big thumbs up to Marie ;) The view from both the house I slept, and the restaurant is stunning, some of the best I discovered on my trips in Costa Rica! Food in the restaurant is good, the waiters are friendly and also very service orientated! All in all a really good experience!

This place is awful. I booked 31 days and left after 13. Ignore the photos (they’re 30 years old) and ignore the positive reviews; not reliable at all. The ripped screen door from my first room never got fixed. Someone just moved it to the room I moved into a couple of days later. (Bugs come in at night when the lights are on, which is common sense in a tropical country.) I had three refrigerators and NONE of them worked. (They’ll also get passed around; not fixed.) I threw more food in the garbage than I ate. Expensive grass-fed steaks! And the microwave wasn’t cleaned; someone else’s food stains everywhere. And some point, you just give up asking for common sense things… There were several dead cockroaches in the window frame of my second room. This place isn’t getting a Covid clean or a normal clean. My sheets and pillowcases had mysterious orange stains on them. And the pool got closed down for three days by the police because the little French guy I see walking around (owner, manager?) never wears a mask and neither do his friends. The same little French guy spent an hour one night screaming into a telephone. The police came that night, too. I’m guessing other guests called them. I could hear this ****** even though I was 25 meters away and had my headphones on. The mattress in the first room I had was unusable due to the many craters; I considered sleeping on the floor. The furnishings are all ancient, dirty, and uncomfortable. I could literally go on forever. There was also something living in the ceiling above my second room. In the mornings and sometimes in the middle of the night, it made a lot of noise. The first time I thought someone was working on the roof; that’s how big it is and loud it is. There is a crack in the ceiling, so I could see it moving around, and parts of its home and food (bugs) fall through the crack. There was so much junk on my floor, and it all came from the ceiling. The good news is that you’ll get some exercise chasing bugs around with your shoe. This is not OK. Not for a motel and definitely not for a “resort,” which is laughable. On my last day, another guy was complaining about normal things (single-ply toilet paper, no coffee maker in the room, the restaurant closing 45 minutes early) and I looked at him and said, “You have no idea how bad it is here.” Don’t miss the $10 breakfast – two scrambled eggs, toast, and a small serving of old beans and rice that’s been reheated in the microwave. Of course, the photo of the breakfast plate on their website includes meat and fruit. As I said, the photos are 30 years old. Either way, it’s tremendous if you like throwing away money. I’m a full-time traveler, and this is the most disappointing Airbnb or hotel experience I’ve ever had. I would have left much sooner but the internet was down several days. So much for getting any work done. (Watch someone from the resort comment on this and ignore everything else.)

Forget the small imperfections of the room - the view, the staff and the restaurant will blow your mind! We had room #2 (valley side) with a queen bed and FULL kitchen. Includes a loveseat and small dining table for two. The staff was very helpful and gave lots of suggestions. The restaurant may be small - and the menu may have a small selection, but the chef - is OUTSTANDING! The best meals we’ve had in CR! Highly suggest this location for any type of trip!
