The food is very good, the service is also very good, and the waiters are very polite. It will be more convenient for self-driving travelers, but it is also very convenient to take a taxi. The station and the hotel can be reached within 15 minutes. The environment is also very comfortable, and you can soak in the hot springs while looking at the natural landscape, which is very first-class. The only problem is that the facilities are relatively old, but the hygiene is good. If you like old Japanese-style hotels, it is actually a good choice.

I stayed at Shiotsubo Onsen for three nights at the end of November 2023. I was welcomed for early checkin and throughout my stay well taken care of by the highly hospitable staff. The meals were delicious and the service impeccable. The onsite Onsen is very comfortable and accessible. A larger public Onsen is available down the road at Hoshino. For birders / hikers / outdoor enthusiasts this place can't be beat for the location and price!

The building was old. There were many stains on the carpet and sliding doors, so it was hard to say it was clean, but the rooms, bath, dining room, parking lot, etc. were well-cleaned. The hotel staff were very friendly. The hot spring had a slight disinfectant-like smell, which I think is due to the circulation of the water. It was said to be a weak alkaline spring, but it didn't feel particularly moist or smooth. The open-air bath was not suitable for the season, so it was just right. There is a spring water pond in front of the open-air bath, so you need to be careful not to get in by mistake, lol. The dinner was just the right amount of food, and included eggplant dengaku, tonpouro, tempura, and sea bream temari sushi, which was visually appealing and never boring. Perhaps due to the coronavirus restrictions, there were many guests staying without meals, but the dining room was quiet and I was able to relax. I think the location is good for visiting during the autumn foliage season. However, the road from the main road to the hotel is quite steep, so it may be difficult in winter without studless tires or chains. There are no convenience stores nearby, and although there are vending machines, canned coffee costs 150 yen, which is the hotel price. If you are coming from Nakakaruizawa, there is a convenience store, so it is recommended to use that. The entire building is non-smoking, but smoking was allowed in the rooms.
