During May I visited with my wife the beautiful island of Corfu. We stayed for a week at the Bella Venezia, a small hotel with perhaps less than 40 rooms. The location is ideal for the tourist. Almost all places one wishes to visit are within a short walking distance. The hotel must have been recently refurbished as everything was in immaculate condition. The reception foyer is attractive and accommodates a bar. Our room was not the largest we have ever been to, but it was more than adequate. The bed was extremely comfortable. The room had all the basic amenities one expects in a modern hotel and free drinks on arrival. However, conspicuous by their absence were soft tissues and, in particular, information (e.g. check in/out times, breakfast times, relevant internal telephone numbers, maps of the area etc.). What we found very irritating, however, was the room design. The lavabo was situated in the room rather than in the bathroom. What this means is that when one of you gets up in the morning, the other one has to follow as he/she cannot remain asleep because of the inevitable noise. I found it a challenge putting my head under the fixed tap to wash in the morning, a challenge that I failed. One had to be a contortionist to do that, and I am not. The bathroom was modern and comfortable and all shower gels of high quality. Like children, we enjoyed having free sweets on our pillows waiting for us every day. It was an immense pleasure having breakfast al fresco. The breakfast comprised both hot and cold items. It may not be the largest variety you ever had, but whatever was available was fresh and of high quality. The hotel has no restaurant, but this creates no problem as it is surrounded by a wide choice of restaurants. Undoubtedly, the greatest asset of the hotel is its staff. Invariably, they were charming, courteous, knowledgeable, and helpful. During our stay we attended two free music concerts at the hotel, and both were very enjoyable. The hotel is maintained at an exceedingly high standard of cleanliness throughout. On the day of our departure, we were given a small bag of local ‘goodies;’ it was a generous, and very much appreciated, gesture. I would not hesitate for a second to stay at the Bella Venezia hotel if I were to return to Corfu. The innate hospitality of the staff is second to none and credit to Greek character and culture.
