- The service is premium from the moment we land on the island; -The meals are practically all “a la carte” and very well prepare; -The villas are very comfortable and the hygiene and cleaning conditions are excellent; -The hotel offers options for extra activities in case we want to do something different (although they have extra payment); -I was very happy with the experience at the resort. I recommend visiting ;)

Beautiful NIHI Sumba is a revelation. Set on the south shore of Sumba, next to a long crescent of sand and pounding surf, it’s a luxury hotel with boutique vibe. This place is expensive. If you are able to stay, the welcome is warm, the rooms are exquisitely designed and the food is superb. Don’t come for a swim in calm seas, but long walks along the beautiful beach are a delight, as are the horses which you can see running there (and ride). If you are a surfer, the break is world class. In addition to offering multiple excursions, NIHI is an active supporter of the Sumba Foundation which works to improve the lives of the Sumbanese people.

1. The food is terrible 2. The food is terrible 3. The food is terrible 4. The food is terrible 5. The food is terrible Astonishing that you could pay $8,000 per night for a room and struggle to find something that tastes good on the menu. They couldn't even make a decent tasting Nasi Goreng--an Indonesian staple. It's shameful of the management not to hire a world class chef when they charge world class prices. If you come here, don't plan to stay long. You will be bored stiff with the food after 2 days and will simply need to leave because you can't stand another meal there, and there are no other options. That was the case for us. Also beware that in spite of world class prices, you still get mere "local" level of service that comes with all the rough edges. It's also very sad and retro that they claim to be so progressive and yet think nothing of having "working horses"who are enslaved for the purposes of making money for the resort. We wanted nothing to do with that old school model of animal cruelty. We were sad to see how sweaty, over-worked, and isolated in small areas these poor horses were. This place does not deliver an experience worthy of what they charge. And the owner is nowhere to be found....

Had been looking so forward to this trip because I have heard so much about this resort before. Sadly the product does not match the slick marketing. The resort itself is pleasant but nothing special. It looks dated and not very well maintained. The location, spa, beach and the horses were outstanding. Sadly everything else was a major disappointment. The local staff barely spoke English so communication was a HUGE issue. We had a lovely villa but housekeeping was appalling. No clean glasses, no ice, towels were not replenished, room service dishes were left on the dining table overnight despite the turn down service. The bathtub tap was left turned on by housekeeping which caused an overflow that flooded the entire floor. The quality of food at the restaurants was only average. Overall service was lacking. This trip was not worth what was paid.

Truly unique and until now unimaginable experience. At every turn during our stay, we felt like we had experiences that were greater than anything we imagined. The accommodations were exceptional. Authentic, well maintained and thoughtfully laid out to maximize emersion into the surrounding environment. Dining options were broad and fantastic, offering a taste of local cuisine as well as other options to meet and exceed expectations those with tastes for other things from around the world. The accommodations, amenities and food were enough to set Nihi apart for us alone but that was not the only thing that made the trip so amazing. The people are what really took the experience from over the top to out of this world. Our concierges were amazing at educating, informing and enabling us. We engaged in activities in the water and with the horses on land and were enabled by an amazing and very experienced talented staff. We engaged in yoga and at the spa for wellness treatments, and all experiences were second to none. We were fortunate to have been there at a time when the renowned photographer Jason Wolcott was in-residence at Nihi. To have someone like Jason capturing images of our experience was unimaginable and amazing. Lastly, it seemed like most of the staff from dining to housekeeping to even some of the groundskeepers took the time to engage us which was a great personal side to the trip we would not have imagined. We were truly honored to have been enabled by the world class watermen (from Tropicsurf and the watermen on Nihi staff), equestrian team, yoga instruction, wellness staff and the photographer/artist Jason Wolcott. We were excited to have had the chance to get to know others on staff at Nihi including some of their experiences. Tip for other travelers - Engage and share with the staff things you'd like to do, put yourself in their very capable hands and you'll be amazed at the experiences you will have.

I was initially skeptical that a hotel consistently rated "the best in the world" could live up to expectations, yet somehow it does. We have simply never been to a property like this, and we consider ourselves well traveled. Going into the detail of all of the "surprises" guests encounter would not only ruin the experience for others. There are simply too many to count. Speaking in general terms, the hotel has a "soul" that you feel as a guest. The warmth of the service, the smiles of the staff, the thoughtful details all create an energy that it is unlike any other hotel we have ever seen. We will be back. Impressive
