frequent visitor here and you can tell that the staff have been trained to look after people the way they should be. Will visit again. Within walking distance of everything including the Railway station and Nightclubs shopping etc. helpful staff

I have been to the Grand many times over the years. Always a great do. This year's Chris**as party was no different. Food was hot, service good. We were a little fiesty. Hope you will have us back next year..., 😊...

We were upgraded to a privilege room but it was a very dirty and poor room. The picture at the front of the room was also gone. The windows were also very dirty and looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a long time. There were food crumbs from previous tenants on the floor. I could continue to live here without pretending not to care, but it's different for the staff. Never stay at this hotel.

We have stayed at this hotel several times, mainly because of its great location in the city centre. When we checked in, the receptionist recognized that we had stayed here last time and upgraded us to a privileged room for free based on the issues we had last time (shower not working). We were given a lovely and spacious upgraded room and we also noticed great improvements to the reception bar and lobby area. The hotel looked older a few years ago but is undergoing a strictly planned refurbishment.

We booked the Mercure Hotel in February as a drop off point for 3 days break at Easter on route to the South from Durham so I could see the Space Centre, Richard 3 centre etc. we arrived to find the hotel closed and under renovation. Staff produced an email showing the booking had been cancelled - however a search of my mails which I check closely every day and a full check of deleted emails showed I had not received any communication!. At this point the staff took over and were absolutely superb. The General Manager talked with us - lovely guy, and assured us they would help. We were brought coffee and then given an option of alternative hotels. The service was second to non!. It was sad we couldn’t stay as the hotel looked beautiful!. A special mention to Tobias who went above and beyond in booking another place for us and then actually going there with us to assist!. Couldn’t fault them turning a major disaster into a pleasant experience!.

I visited the hotel around 9pm after spending a lovely evening in a nearby Restaurant with my Mother and Aunty. We decided to finish the evening off with a nightcap and were challenged by a Man behind Reception who rudely asked us what we were doing. We were informed that the hotel is only open to Residents and Chris**as Parties. We were refused a drink and told to leave with a 90 year old and a 86 year old lady to wait for our taxi on the street in the pouring rain. After protesting were allowed to sit in the Reception area. I asked for the Head Office address which was declined. I approached the Reception desk again and the Duty Manager was called via a walky talky and appeared 5 minutes later. I recounted my experience and complained about the Man behind the desk wanting to remove us on to the street. He explained all facilities were closed to non residents and I have have since found out that the hotel is being used for ayslum seekers which they should have told us in the first place. Appalling to see once a Grand Hotel hit rocket bottom, You dont deserve any business and I hope you close permantly. Claire Pettit

I had cancelled my previous venue due to Covid but when I found out The Mercure Hotel was free on my wedding date, I couldn’t resist booking the venue. I can honestly say I haven’t regretted it since. I hired the Kings Room and came down from the balcony, which felt like a fairy tale story come to life. The venue looks phenomenal, where we got endless compliments from our family and friends, where they stated the venue was amazing. The team at The Mercure Hotel were hands on and helped us out throughout the event, so a big thank you for hosting our wedding. Thank you! Gagandip xx

Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Staff provided me with hot water for my coffee whilst I was doing my security training. Overall, I would recommend staying at this hotel as it is very clean.
