I stayed in October 2023 and posted on Tripadvisor just how disappointed I was after 15 years+ or so of staying at the hotel . Title was “lost its mojo”. The hotel responded by apologising and looked forward to welcoming me back . Well I did try. At check in I was hoping for a better welcome and the gentleman on reception had some difficulty in finding my booking via through SLH -Small Luxury Hotels of the World. I realise and appreciate there were no upgrades available but this was something I always got when booking with SLH. One of the reasons I enjoy staying at the hotel ( you will see many on my previous tripadvisor posts) are the Hypnos mattresses and, indeed, I bought Hypnos for my home. On checking into my Executive room and sitting on the bed the mattress seemed quite soft, so I thought I would check if it was Hypnos. There was no Hypnos label ,but a manufacturers quality label attached gave the postcode where Hypnos are made. However the mattress was in a shocking state . It was clearly quite old as it had gone a yellowish colour and worse still it was covered in stains. The sort of mattress that should never appear in a 5 star hotel and should have been thrown out. A gentleman from reception , I believe a deputy, came to have a look and said it wasn’t great and maybe coffee had been spilt. I will attach photographs of stains all over the mattress including the central area. I was not prepared to sleep on that mattress . He apologised and said housekeeping would get it steam cleaned for the future. No other rooms were available and when I said I would check out no assistance was offered to find another hotel. So I didn’t stay and managed to find another room at Dukes Hotel , just down the road. I’m sorry to say that St James Hotel is simply not what it used to be. I still love the bar area but that’s about it. The rooms do need some TLC.All the staff have changed over the last 18 months or so, I don't know anyone and they don't know me. That might sound arrogant but a “welcome back Mr Cooke “or even a note in the room makes you feel wanted and valued.
