The Capri Hotel

We decided to go to Ojai for my wife's birthday on March 22, 2023. She thought it would be fun to stay in a place that was built the year she was born and so did I. The online photos and aesthetic are admittedly cool, but that where it ends. I get really peeved with a too cool for school” attitude in restaurants and other establishments in the hospitality space. That's this place. But aside from that vibe, there are HUGE issues with this “hotel” (motel really), chief of which are the PAPER THIN WALLS. Next is the bathroom. Remember. This renovation was done in 2020. So with Covid, wear and tear should be minimal by early 2023 when we visited. The bathroom door is made of particle board which was completely swollen and ruined by water damage from the shower that features a fitted glass wall that only covers half the stall. As a result water sprays all over the wall and floor and even if you try to use the bath mat, it's completely soaked after a shower. Poor, impractical design. The Daiken brand AC was also odd. I've used many mini-split systems, but this one did not feature a remote that operated as a thermostat. Sure, it had a temperature setting, but no readout out of what temperature the room was CURRENTLY at, so there is no way to know where to set the temp relative to that. The in-room coffee and tea consists of a kettle and instant coffee. No Nespresso or other coffee service found in other boutique hotels of this price range. I assumed they were encouraging us to come to the lobby to enjoy their coffee ”service” which features paper cups (okay fine) but no lids. Crazy. And Like seriously - do you think people aren't going to want to take their coffee away or back to the room? Where’s the kids?! Oh, and as a cherry on the top, add bad WiFi that only worked part of the time. Good thing our t-mobile data devices worked there. A cheap, ill-conceived cosmetic renovation does not a boutique motel make. Others have mentioned all of these things in prior reviews, so l'm not saying anything new here. Listen to them, and us. I don't know if there are better options in Ojai, but I know you should avoid the Capri.
Hummingbird Inn

We stayed in The Double Queen Bungalow room number 14. The pictures ARE NOT HONEST. They purposely made it look WAYYYYYYY BIGGER with manipulative editing of photos. So that’s a VERY Los Angeles slumlord type of thing to to. Exactly what we drove away from but here we are. The bed linens + pillow covers “looked clean” but smelled like stale dirty water + dirt & sweat not being properly cleaned & sanitized off the sheets from PREVIOUS STRANGERS. That was so gross to me. No excuse. I killed 4 spiders throughout the night that I noticed pop up all along my bed! Hell no. The shower didn’t work. We turned it on, it filled up the tub instantly & no matter what way we flipped the old (unmarked) switch for the drain, it WOULD NOT DRAIN. And the bath was clearly not cleaned before we got there as it had small bugs, dirt, dust, and hairs come up to the surface of the water that clogged up the tub. So we had to go back home DIRTY after all our hikes. Gross! The chairs & table right outside our window. FOR OUR BUNGALOW was taken over by three men who literally just rudely took it over while they had their own entire larger table for THEIR BUNGALOW. They LITERALLY FACED OUR WINDOW & had all these devices & phones FACING US. 2 women alone. They also had a big dog that was BARKING (violates policy) that prevented us from being able to take our senior dog outside to the restroom and stayed stuck in our rooms until those men left! Our senior dog turning 17 is THE REASON we came here! That was super disturbing & ugly to me. That’s not very Ojai. I wish the staff could have directed them to their own table but they did nothing. It’s not my job to make sure guests feel safe & have privacy they paid for. I feel like we are owed some of our money back for that but we didn’t want to make it a big deal as it we didn’t want more of our time ruined with possible retaliation or rudeness from the staff. So that’s why I’ll leave this honest review instead. There’s also a dude doing ****** in the open STEPS AWAY FROM YOUR ROOM on the sidewalk across the way. So we are definitely coming back to Ojai but NEVER coming back to this hotel. They need to lower their prices for sure. I feel like they care less about ppl who book less expensive (still too expensive) rooms.
Chantico Inn

The hotel is in total disrepair. To start, the people at the reception were totally dirty and badly presented. Then, the room. It had a bed four feet above the floor: a dangerous setting for people that may need to go to the bathroom in the night, or just to get on and off. The room had an smelly, old, and poorly working air conditioner. I tried to open the window, no screens!! The bathroom so old, with furniture that was broken, no drawers could be open. The rug of the room was super dirty and the two chairs that they had were so dirty that I was concerned to set on them. The room is supposed to have a desk, and they did: an old desk, very dusty, small, and with no chair to bring close to it to work. The towels and pillow were old, smelly, lumpy. The breakfast was the worst that I had seen and experience. This was the worst trip I ever had, and it is a shame of this people to rent places like that. I saw the image on expedia and it looked ok. But now I know it was a set up and what they offer is very different and low quality. They should close the place!
Casa Ojai Inn

This is a wonderful Inn located in the very quiet edge of the main drag through this quaint town within walking distance to a few restaurants & shops. My first impression was it's very safe there. I never once felt that anywhere in Ojai was unsafe, especially at the inn. I routinely went out to the pool alone late at night, so it meant a great deal to feel that safe! The room was nice, very clean, & had great comfy furniture. Parking was right at the front door so that was awesome. We're a very picky group to impress, but this was a very nice stay for us. The customer service must be mentioned. Every contact with staff members throughout the week was a great experience. They were a wealth of knowledge to us Ohioans visiting Ojai for the first time. And they took care of our every need. I'd certainly go again to stay there as it was just an all around great time for us. Highly recommend the Casa Ojai Inn!
